Yes, percentage of income spent.

In addition to some of the other points made about obesity, I think another contributing factor is stress.
Some of the replies remind me of an old joke. Stop me if you have heard it.
A man went to the doctor complaining that his junk had turned Orange. The doc gave him a full physical, lab work, xrays, the full treatment and couldn't find anything. He asks the man some questions and finally asks what he does at work. The guy tells him he doesn't have a job, got laid off six months ago. The doc asks, well, what do you do all day? The guy says nothing, just sit around eating Cheetos and watching porn.

A chemist friend blames a great deal of this on the sugar industry....prior to WW2 sugar was not a common additive but was used extensively in C Rations for the energy factor and to make some of that food more palatable.
When the conflict ended the ramped up sugar industry looked to civilian markets.....
I buy into that...

However, imo the main culprit is consumption/portions and lack of physical activity.

More is less. Larger portion sizes induce people to eat more. It is one trick that the processed/fast food industry plays on the sheeple to increase revenue. Give them more but convince them it is a bargain.

Fat Shaming, guilty as charged. I am prejudiced against obese folks. And I am no slim Jim myself. When I was courting my wife I raced bicycles and had a 30" waist weighing 160 lbs. Now I am 50 lbs heavier and have a 35" waist and feel like total ****. So throwing rocks in glass houses and all that.

But I'm talking about the obese...as my relatives in Holland identified as...whoppers (ala burger king). I agree to get to that level is totally self induced. Folks with no means cannot afford good food, get that. But how many super sized meals a day does it take to get to 400+ lbs?

I was at a grocery store yesterday buying food for the weekend and noticed a guy entering the store. Huge. Unwashed. His athletic shoes were blown out, untied, and his calfs were distorted, bloated, like the size of my thighs, red and filled with sores. Near the entrance a store employee was offering free samples of a frozen pizza, yeah ok it was Sprouts, and this guy was gorging the samples until the manager asked him to move on. Now this guy was super friendly, smiling all the time, but must have some sort of issue right? I ended up in the express line behind him, his shop was sensible, but it was the perfect storm. He had a bin item but didn't have the code. The checker looked in her book for 5 minutes. He volunteered to walk and get the code (as I said he was friendly). Took him 10 minutes round trip...arriving back with no kidding more slices of the sample pizza. It comes time to checkout and he forgot his wallet... I moved to a full service lane and was walking to my car and he was just getting back to the entrance...huffing and puffing all the way.

I felt sorry for the guy, but despised him non the less. Guilty as charged.

I need to lose weight before the holidays. I am huge at 210 lbs and 5'11".

JavaB,
I appreciate your honesty...I think most here feel the same but their natural PC overtakes their veracity so they must revert to....well, you know.
I need to lose a few myself as am 175 now and I do not like that...I should be about 168...and it is a battle and that is my point. Especially as we age...metabolism and all of that....I'm 66 now.
Some, many, have simply decided to 'like' themselves as fat people rather than take the steps to be healthy...and, they came up with 'fat shaming' to make themselves feel good about their laxness..obesity...bad habits.
It actually gets back to the never being able to make a value judgement about anything.....everything is as good as everything else...lifestyles, attitudes, political positions, cultures ....
except that is total bull****.

Each to their own and all that, but I too do not understand the "I'm fat and proud of it/gonna flaunt it, even" that is becoming more and more prevalent in American culture - seems really weird to me (thinking of supersized people in skimpy clothes, pigging out in public with a "you've got that right" attitude about them - even posting pics on social media celebrating their obesity, and so forth). People can do as they please, but that stuff is a real head scratcher.

JavaB - kudos for honesty, but if you didn't say anything to the guy you didn't "fat shame" him. Fat shaming is making someone feel bad for being fat by saying something to or about them with the intention to make the person feel shame for being fat.

Simply having a thought in your mind about the person but saying nothing isn't really fat shaming, so don't feel bad on that account. It's the external expression of the thought that's at issue.

Cheers

d.

A recent study found that women who are slightly over weight live longer on average than do men who mention it.

I do tend to judge the contents of a portly person's grocery cart. I need to lose 10 lbs myself, but my wife says I am too critical of others. Sometimes I say things under my breath, unconsciously.

Good point. I'm sure that Dean thinks he has a better shot at catching overweight prey (men, livestock, repulsive conservative "women") with his chloroform soaked rag (the only way Dean keeps anyone, or any thing, from beating feat at the first sight of him).

I know some very large people who are healthy, talented, intelligent, pleasant to be around, and they are helpful to me. I honestly don't care. It doesn't seem to impact on their lives, or their ability to be a functioning member of society. If it is impacting health and quality of life, then I think it is a problem. If it is a result of, or the cause of a poor self image, then it is a problem.

I meet a lot of people, and I wonder what some people would look like if you could see them at a soul level. In some ways I would think that you can, and once you can, perhaps one starts to respond to people at that level. Of course, if you want to see people at that level, you have to stand in front of a mirror first, and look at yourself. When and if you meet God or his emissaries, they are perhaps going to look right through you in such a way. Hopefully with compassion, and not with judgement, hopefully with concern for your being and development, and not at your overall perfection.

We are all Bozos on this bus. The scariest clowns are the ones who take themselves seriously.
