Special order colour?

I recently acquired a 1978 911SC Targa in the colour "Champagne Metallic" with a matching paint code plate (514-9-3). However, from what I can read in different books and websites, this colour was only an option on 1976 921E's. Is it possible this colour was special ordered from the factory?

thats an OE color for the 911's 1975 to 1978 and then in 1981 and 1982 . if its a special order color it would be listed as a 99 color code stated on the color code tag of the car . now that does not meen that they did not order the car in that color . 99 colors for the most part are real special order colors . colors that porsche may have offered in the past but do not have offered for the year of your car . also do not confuse a rear color to a color that was not a big seller . a rear color is a 99 color and not a color offered in the year of your car .

Ok, great! May I be so bold as to ask where you found this information? Because I have looked all over the internet, and the "911SC Essential Companion" doesn't list it as an original color, and neither does Simon's 911SC website. The only place I could find this color code is on a website about 912s: Color Codes, where it's listed as a special 912E color
Hope I'm not nagging, just a new owner being curious about his 911, that's all

new info

I know I shouldn't revive an old thread of mine... but: I recently e-mailed the Porsche factory to find out more about my car, and they sent me the following info:

chassis 911 821 xxxx
engine 658 xxxx is original
color 99=special wish,no info in my files
interior 09=leatherette black,seats leather
dealer UA=Los Angeles
invoice Dec.'77
options Y31(groupnumber contains 395=alloy wheels ,461=electric antenna,474=Bilstein,494=2 speakers rear,565=leather steering wheel 380mm,566=foglights,590=center console)and
261=electric mirror right
389=Radio Porsche CR Stereo
482=light for engine compartment
496=chrome parts black
651=power windows

So I guess my color was a special order (99) color after all? The plaque still states 514-9-3 and not 99.

Have you seen any 438 paint codes? My PPS shows it's a 99 paint code and the tag shows 438.
