Choosing a paint color
I'm currently in the process of backdating my 911 and it's currently at the body shop. They're wrapping up the metalwork and I'm having to finally decide on a color. I'm torn between guards red, gulf blue, and signal yellow. Signal yellow is probably my favorite, but I've never seen it in person on a car. How did you narrow it down to a single color?

I'm going to be struggling with this question as well. For a backdate car, I'm thinking definitely not Red. Personally, I feel like the Guards Red is a G-Body Color. So, out of Signal Yellow and Gulf Blue... I would suggest Signal yellow as it is an awesome 70's color.
What I am going to do is to see if it is possible to get some small sprayed out samples to compare. Good luck.

when my customers are trying to decide on there car color I would 1st ask what are the colors the catches your eye?
many people have certain colors that appeals to them so picking a color that appeals to you is the 1st step on picking a color for your car that you like. that are other factors that also come into play like the color of your interior and your trim color on the car. say with a light blue and having black trim IMO looks better than it does with a chrome trim. having say a blue car with tan interior is ok but will not do the exterior color justice. like Rodney stated getting a few spray out on the spray out car bodies is a good idea. down side is most shops don't have the bodies and only tend to do spray out cards. to do a spray out body can get costly because of the cost of the bodies , the paint and time to spray them. personally blues and grays are the colors I tend to like. |

While it may be unorthodox and not exactly the same, I've purchased a number of spray cans of paint based on Porsche colors from paintscratch.com
White poster board (12"x12" squares) works for me to apply a few light coats to for an even coverage then let dry. Then you can move them around in the sun and shade condition, inside, etc. to get a feel for how the colors react and display. YMMV |

Rennbow rocks...no doubt (outside of the halls of Porsche) the most complete collection of Porsche colors. Still though, it is a work in progress and there are a few colors MIA.

I keep thinking I would like to keep my '66 912 the original polo red, since I like originality. But I do like a few colors more. Red is just so common. If I stay with polo red, I'll go with a tan interior. It's hard to decide.

I just went through the rennbow website for all '66 cars. (If nothing else, my car should be a color that was available in 1966) I did this exercise with my wife; always a good idea. We found some colors we liked, but then clicked on polo red last. None of the colors were quite good enough to replace polo red. Maybe there's a reason it's such a common color.
What color was your car originally? Since you're back-dating, it doesn't really matter, but I'm curious.

When I was trying to select a color I went to a Porsche event where many old Porsche's were there so I could see the colors in person. Original color of my 70 911T was signal yellow and it faded terribly, I went with Tangerine
