Body wrap in lieu of repainting

My '93 BMW 325is was left outdoors by the previous owner until I bought it recently. Its paint has gone bad, and all of the estimates for repainting it specify taking it all the way down to bare metal. Would a vinyl wrap job be a viable alternative? Does anyone have any experience with this.

No direct experience but in the past have been told when I asked about it that a good paint sublayer is required for the wrap to adhere correctly, etc. I was told that a failing paint layer was not a good base to install a wrap on top of.

A wrap is not a bad idea although it only provides a temporary solution.

Not a great solution if you plan to keep the car outside. You’ll get shrinking of the vinyl if you live in a place that has seasons and surface rust along the edges where it shrinks and pulls.

Wrapped a Jeep for a few years with great results. Hard to repair damage, but harder to damage than paint. I did prep and prime before covering so may have improved my results.
