"Steve McQueen Grey" Paint color?

Hi,

I was told that Steve McQueen used to spec a non-factory, non-metallic grey paint for his cars. Anyone heard of this, or know the paint code?

Thanks!

Someone can probably find it for you in a recent Excellence article on his 911S. I'm not at home or I'd go right in the "library" and get it.

glasurit 615 gray

This was steve mcqueens later gray 911, I also have been looking for this paint code, I think that its Porsche 615 glasurit, line 22. Its different than 6401 or 6801 slate gray, i just seen a car on ebay 76 911 with the same color. Was a special order color and was also repainted 615 Porsche glasurit . Used on 1976-89 cars.

Same car, different lighting.
Love this color, not my car, but hijacked this pic from Cars/Coffee meet in Irvine, Ca. Guess this car's a regular there.

Can someone confirm Glasurit 615?

Hopefully that 930 will be back, I really like the color on McQueen's car but I wonder how different it is from what is on my long hood car.

Obviously mine is a metallic respray (over Bahia Red) but I have no idea what color it actually is.....

Yea, that McQueen grey is a great color. It might be a bit dark for me though...I might be thinking a little more of a middle grey for my project. Thanks for the photos though.

I don't think so but it should have been!

That seafoam green and slate gray are the 2 colors I would consider for a RSR...

Pick black and you'd have to deal with BBII...
Plenty of signal orange, silver and viper green one's around....
Even flat black isn't original anymore...

Well, grey is the color choice for me. I'm not sure if it's McQueen Grey, but it's cool...

The following from Glasurit Rep:

Thank you for your interest in Glasurit products.

It appears as though we do have a match for this particular color. Porsche code 6801, Slate Grey, is available in Glasurit 22 Line (single stage). The only minor difference that I see is that our database shows this as a 1968 color versus a 1967 color that you indicate in your e-mail below.

The BASF code for this color is 7794.

If you need help locating a collision center using Glasurit paint or a Glasurit paint distributor (if you plan on painting the car yourself), please let me know and I'll put you in touch with a local BASF sales representative.

Thank you,
Gordon

A.B.--I believe this is the code currently available from Glasurit--and may supercede the 6401 code?

Hey AbbyAk,

Thanks for the great info. I wonder if it would be a total travesty if I lightened that color a bit...?

It is...it's just a bit dark. The grey I'm envisioning is much lighter and more neutral. I have created the perfect grey in my head...

Have you looked at the old VW colors?

Don't know what this one is but my guess is it would be close to what you want:

This is what I have in mind. (Minus the red carrera...but I couldn't change that. The color and wheels are right though...) Thanks Xbox.
