911 Hood to Fender gap question
Good day everyone,
I am in the final stages of fitting fenders and hood, and need some advice. Both fenders were replace with Dansk as the originals had been cut poorly with flares. I have great gaps between the fender and doors, Hood and cowl, but on both sides of the hood I have an area that pinches in a bit halfway down. You can see the right side in the phot attached, and the left side is even a bit more obvious. Question is, what do I do about it? The hood is straight so I suspect the fender itself... just want some suggestions on the best way to fix. Thanks, Thomas

Just a thought Thomas. You could undo a bolt or two that hold the fender to the body and slip a washer or similar in to push the fender out a bit.

Thanks Bill, I tried that. If I want to move the entire fender over I can use the washers, but in just one spot like this the rigidness of the fender wins, and the inner fender has a small curve due to the washer!
I wish I had a Porsche fender to put on here and determine if it was the way the Dansk fenders were pressed out. Appreciate the comment.

A while ago I replaced both fenders. One a Restoration Design and the other a second hand Porsche one. The Restoration Design one was a bit of a wrestling match but once I'd got it on it looks good. Strangely the Porsche one could do with being a few mm longer at the foremost point. The Restoration one had a bigger gap all the way along where it meets the hood so I removed the "barrier tape" and it now looks great. So I guess a bit of artistic licence is needed with these old cars LOL

how you get the trunk lid to fender gaps is by moving the lip of the apron that the top of the fender bolts to in or out.
this is done by using a block of wood a BFH and hitting the top of the apron lip. you set your hood right to left and get your gap to the cowl to the trunk lid. then if you like the gap say at the front edge of the hood but it's to big or small for the rest pull the fender back off measure the distance from the edge of the hood to the top lip of the apron. then move the rest of the apron in or out to the same measurement. this should get you close. I tend to make it just a bit tight from the gap that looks good. once the fender is back on I use the block of wood and a BFH and hit the edge of the fender to move it out to open the gap to what I want it to be. BFH AKA big F****** hammer. when I make the distance tighter it's only a MM or 2. to much hammering even with the wood and you can damage the edge of the fender. it's best to lay the wood across the fender bolts and not directly on the edge of the fender itself. |

Since I have this narrowing on both left and right, I used a hydraulic 'spreader' to move the inner fender (apron) out. All that happened was when I bolted up the fender it pulled the apron to the fender and I had the same gap again. It almost seems like an issue with the way the fenders were stamped out and at that point there is a narrowing or deviation from a straight line. I need another fender to put on just to confirm where the problem really is. Thomas
