when i did my 73 2 years ago i was quoted $800-900. however the blaster for some reason did not know that he could not blast away undercoating. he spent twice the time trying to get it off and charged me for the extra hours. i think it ended up being $2k with epoxy prime afterwords. when i have it done again i will use paint stripper to remove the undercoating first so the media blaster can remove all the paint and rust. i recommend peel-away stripper. i think you should be able to get the media blast for under $1k if the car is disassembled and the undecoating is at least somewhat removed. i realize the point of media blasting is to avoid the labor to scrape off the undercoating but the fact is that the media just bounces off the undercoating. the other option is to have the car dipped but i think this is quite a bit more expensive.

Now that Im thinking more about this, I might strip most the car myself and leave trunk and engine compart for the media guy, witch would be a pain in the ass for me to get to but easy for the media guy.

We send our tubs to a heat strip process, it is probably the most economic way to get rid of all the undercoating, but still at about $2K, using walnut shells, for soda blasting add another $3K

We get chassis done for about $600 here. That doesn't include any epoxy work, but I imagine you could do that yourself, or use that Picklex to stop from flash rusting.

do you think I could be alright if the place I get the car blasted at is only 30 or so miles away and I rush it to my shop and spray it with some primer? Would self etching primer be the way to go in that case?

my car has been bare metal for months. Granted, I'm in Colorado, but it only takes a couple of hours with a d/a sander to go over it and get fresh metal to prime. So, I wouldn't sweat it too much.

I just had my car done today for $500. I was actually going to have it done last fall and he quoted me $425, but I wasn't ready to prime it before winter, so I put it off until the spring as I didn't want the bare metal to sit all winter. So, I called him this week and he said to bring it by this weekend. He upped the price to $500 due to increased fuel/media costs - still a bargain. I figured I'd leave it with him for a week or two, but after dropping it off and setting it up on the rotisserie in his shop, he said he'd call me later in the day when he was done with it!

He uses sand and cleaned out every nook and crany, but did not do the big unsupported areas like the hood, just went along all the edges and ~2" in. This isn't a big deal, tho, as I can get a DA sander on those areas v. easily and with a coarse grit the paint will be off in no time. He was concerned that he may get warpage of these big panels as they heat up quite a bit if he hit them with the media.

Anyway, I'm extremely pleased with the job and it beat all the other prices I got which were north of $1K.

Geoff
