Noob needs a tip or two
 

Hi All,

I have an 86 944 NA that I am restoring. It is Zermatt Silver and has had a poor quality re-spray. The paint is lifting on the hood. Any tips on how to remove this and keep the stock factory paint underneath as a base for a correctly applied re-spray?

So the clear coat is lifting?? I would think a complete redo is in order if you want it to look good.

Its not just the clear -- its the clear and the first respray coat. I really can't tell for sure -- but I think there is another coat of clear under that and then the stock factory paint.

You will have to start stripping the car with a d/a sander. You can sand just the affected paint off but I recommend you primer the entire panel after you sand it. Silver and other light metallics need a smooth and uniform surface to lay on.

In order to just remove a top re-spray coating only, will be a PITA. Where the paint is peeling will certainly need to be stripped down to a good solid finish, whether it is the original paint or down further. There are various air operated sanding tools that can be used for this. Also, like Chris mentioned, the entire panel will need to be sanded to obtain a uniform surface, then the entire panel needs priming. There is no telling what you will actually find below that re-spray, that you think is only a single re-spray. You might find more layers than you think are there. Plus, you might find a substantial amount of body filler, or even new metal that has been grafted in. You just won't know, till you get down to it. Also with your location, the panels will need some type of primer applied as soon as you can get it sprayed, even if you are working inside, because you might even have bare metal exposed, in order to obtain a good surface. You being around "Bean Town" there is a fair amount of salt air humidity, just waiting to attack a fresh, exposed surface. Good luck!! Tony.

Tony is correct.

There is atleast 4 layers of junk paint on the hood. Checking the other areas of the car it looks like it might just be clear coming up in places.

I think I will strip hood and see what I have. I will start with cleaning it and sanding it. If that doesn't work I will chemicallt strip it to bare metal.

Can anyone tell me the type of paint that came from factory?
