PPG or Dupont?
 

I only have these two dealers for auto paint locally, which one should I chose? Is there an advantage to a particular brand for better flow? I am going to use a two stage on '77 930, would like the Jegermeister orange...does anyone know the color code for it? What is your preference?

Both brands are good, if you use their top of the line, however if you are gonna use a two stage orange, I would rather go with PPG, I found that thier color like that are more vibrant. The Jegermeister that I did, I had to had to have the paint colormatch, no one had the formula on their database.

My choice would be DBC basecoat and DCU clear, it is expensive, but well worth it.

Thanks for the insight, Axiom, how did you match the paint? Did you use a photo downloaded from the 'net?

I bought a toy one from the Franklin Mint, and compared it to one painted that color, it was very close. here is a picture of it.

No, the guy who does my colormatching does it the old fashion way, eye balling it.

Check with your supplier how do they colormatch. if worse comes to worse, I can put you in touch with may guys here.

PPG has equipment, (& I'm sure others), that will 'read' a color. Take a sample of the color to the jobber. He can read it and have a formula in a matter of minutes.

I stopped using PPG products, after I had received some bad products. The high build surfacer, after mixing with the other PPG "ingredients" would never go off. Plus it even softened the Corvette Panel Adhesive that was used on the composite parts. It even softened some of the gel-coat in spots. It was a mess. MAJOR PITA, and cost me a bundle, repairing all of the damage it caused. All of the products, were from new, sealed, containers that the paint shop delivered. the paint shop refunded the money of the products, and PPG refunded some of the cost of the damage repairs, from their products. So, I have used other products than PPG since then. This was in 1993.

Another way to get a color match is by using a spectophotometer. Most automotive paint stores have one. It takes 3 pictures of paint on a surface and then is plugged into a PC that gives your the closest match. You'd have to take them a car or something with a flat surface with the color..

Out of all the products I've used and had problems with is the PPG epoxy primer DPLF, that thing scared me for life, it failed me on a very important project, I am sure it has been improved, but still, I have my reservations about it.
