Denver/Boulder source for PPG paints
 

Hopefully I will have all the sheet metal I need to have the bottom replaced on the tub of my 68. In the meantime I would like to start stripping and primer coating the miscellaneous smaller parts. After several phone calls I haven't found a PPG supplier. Anyone know of one in the Denver/Boulder area?

Also, if you know of a plate shop that will rechrome small parts (bumper horns, door handles, etc) I'll be looking for that soon as well.

Thats a good idea, I'll probably be investing in primer in late May. Hopefully I'll have everything ready to go by then.

What primer do you guys have in mind?

This kit actually comes highly recommended by my paint and body guy, and he's done a few pebble beach restorations.

Hey Rudy,

Can you give me a breakdown of what PPG products I'll need to prep and paint my car? It turns out that I have a good source for PPG at a discounted rate. Ideally, I'd love "Get 3 quarts of PPG 6579 Hi-Build Primer, 2 quarts of PPG 568 Clear, etc. I'm looking for a basecoat/clearcoat setup, and I have fiberglass to paint. I'm hoping for a high end clear, or something along those lines. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Michael, in my opinion, I'd stay away from ecomonic primers, remember, they are the base of your finish job, the PPG products I use are NCP primer, it is reduce 2 to 1 with NCX 285. it is a good all around primer, does not need additives for using on fiberglass, it is a very high build and with a little imagination, it can be used as a sealer, it does smell like a hang over though. As for paint, DBU for base coat, since it is gonna bea solid color (you are stil going with grey, right?) and for clear, I believe your area is stil allowed to use DCU 2021. with this products, you will have a great finish with little effort. they are very easy to use.

Tony: DP40 is too thin to use as a primer surfacer.

Rudy, I must have mis-read earlier posts. I assume then that I should go with the same process you just suggested to Michael.

Thanks Rudy. The message I got from my guy was that they use PPG-Nexa Autocolor. I have never heard of Nexa, but I'm assuming PPG is pretty standard.

Also, Rudy, any thoughts on quantities?

I'll be doing door jambs, but no trunk or engine compartment, or interior.

Tony: if those products are available to you, I recommend them. for us in the L A area no longer available. DP is a very good bare metal primer, NCP 280 is also very good and can be applied without a self etching coat.

Michael: every brand of paint has 2 or 3 lines of products, Diamond and Owni are the lower quality of of Dupont and PPG, the ones I recommended are top of the line, ask your guy about them an see if they have them, as for quantity, I always get a gallon of paint and clear, just in case I need to do a touch up or go over and area I am not happy with.

Rudy, I have to admit that its been 25 years since I painted a car. Things seem to be more complicated now. I will be painting on bare metal. After I've done all the cleaning, etching, cleaning, etc. So, do I use the DP on the bare metal then the NCP/NCX for the high build?

Michael, what shade of gray are you going to use. My plan also was to use a solid gray. Must be a Boulder thing; I lived there for 20 years before I retired from Ball.

NCP280 1 gallon (doing the whole car plus fiberglass parts)
NCX285 2 quarts, it is reduced 2 to 1 ( buy 1 quart first and see if you need more later, it is expensive)

DBU base coat 1 gallon
DBRR 1170 reducer 1 gallon ( it is reduced 1 to 1)

DCU 2021 1 gallon
DCX 61 1 quart
DT870 1 quart (reduction ratio 4 to 1 to 1)
