Tips for cleaning out interior (padding/glue) prior to painting?

Those of you who cleaned out your interiors of the glue and padding residue, what is the secret? I tried adhesive remover, Goof Off, and while they work, they only work after a LONG time and a lot of chemicals, plus a few towels.

Do I need to really clean through every bit of this before painting, and if I paint, can I do some rustoleum from a spray can or do I have to go pro?

I don't need it for weight reduction, but rather for aesthetics
