I'm planning on a windows out door off repaint in orig. color. Will be skipping interior, engine bay, and trunk. How much paint should I budget for the base coat and the clear coat?
Low and high costs? Best regards, Michael

I used 3 qts of base and a gal of clear. All PPG.
Cost all depends on how good of paint you want and what you are willing to pay. A top of the line CC will cost about $200/gal and the activator might run $80. There are less costly paints as well.

Michael - I just painted my Toyota P/U today and have some recent prices. This is the 10th veh. I've painted over the years; including a 912.
Amount of paint: Bob is pretty accurate. You can usually buy a gallon of any automotive paint product cheaper than you can buy 3 quarts. Therefore, I always buy a gallon of paint, a gallon of primer and the amount of reducer, hardner, etc. recommended by the paint store. Cost: This is an old 1992 Toyota, but it's low miles and worth keeping. All the automotive paint stores in my area are owned by the same company, so my shopping was easy. I was told at a "budget package" of everything I would need would be about $440 including sales tax. A name brand paint like DuPont would run about $650 for materials. After come checking, I ordered everything via the web from TCP Global: http://www.tcpglobal.com/restorationshop/ Shipping and everything totaled $284 and was at my door in 5 days. I just painted the primer today and it went on a good as anything else I've ever used. Hope this helps....

Thanks gents! I'll basically budget for 1 gal. and look at the different levels of quality/pricing online and at my local store.

there is no one answer for that if your using a high solid color like glasurit then 2 QT's should do for most colors . the lower the solids the more color you will need . also there are good hiding colors like blacks and poor hiding colors like yellows, reds and orange that will take more coats to get good coverage . so what ever brand paint line you pick ask your jobber (paint store) what they think .

I bought a gallon of black. I was painting over dark primer. I painted my door jams, trunk, engine bay and the car with 3 quarts and I had some to spare. I have more then a quart of paint left over for those touch-up's - We all hope we never need touch up paint right?
