Single stage paint process?
I am going to have my 1987 Carrera repainted the original Guards Red. The body is prefect and the factory paint is actually pretty good. But I want perfect. My local paint guy (well respected) says he wants to do a single stage? Paint process. He says he does not do a coat of laquer. What do you guys think about this?

Nobody really uses laquer anymore and not sure why that even came up in the conversation.
Single stage paint is ok, but if you want it perfect you should do 2 stage paint which is base coat, clear coat system. In my opinion you should surely do this with red, although not a metallic, red has a tendancy to chalk overtime from the sunlight etc.. The clear coat will help protect it from this. Besides, you can wet sand that clear coat and buff it back a couple times and that red will really pop! Now that I think of it, you might want to find another painter! P-

He may be using lacquer as a term for clearcoat. As Onboost stated reds and yellows have a tendency to, not as much chalking these day, but certainly will fade over time. The clearcoat reflects/refracs the uv rays from the sun. They don't penetrate the color coat. And as Onboost said the clear can be wet sanded and buffed to near perfection.
Your guy may be good but he needs to get with technology. There is no reason NOT to do bc/cc barring money or a concours job on an older automobile. Good luck.

im just starting to learn more about body work and painting...but seems to me, if you look at some early 80's ferrari 308's that are red...they are single stage paint jobs.
as a general rule, compared to 911's - they are very low miles. usually less than 40K. For these cars, the paint usually look quite good. On those that I have seen that were driven on a more regular basis and thus exposed to the sun more - the paint doesnt look so nice. If was gonna spend huge money and effort to strip my car and make it perfect with new paint, I would go with the clear coat
