2 stage paint question
I've painted single stage a bunch of times, no problem.
On a 2 stage, how long should I wait to let the base dry before doing the clear? |
Those times are generally on the instruction label/sheet that comes with the paint and the clear. It will give the "open" time as most vary, depending on manufacturer.

I never trust my memory when painting so I always refer to instructions on the paint can, but some where between 10 -15 minutes should allow enough time to dry. When I paint wheels I usually have 3 coats of color applied then if I have any trash in the paint I wipe with a tack rage to remove and if there is more of an issue I allow to dry 30 minutes and wet sand just the imperfection then I spray color again and blend it in with the existing color coats. Then I spray 3 coats of clear. This coat is harder as most people who have not sprayed much clear have enough clear and suddenly you have too much.
Have fun. Jim |
Got it done, a set of wheels, came out great.
This is the first time I've done metallic/2 stage. Done a complete car in the past with single stage solid color (Dupont Centauri), and lots of smaller parts like rockers, etc. with single stage. IMO 2 stage is a bit easier. The base coat is so "dry" and easy to work with, and the clear goes down very smoothly. |
Glad to hear it worked out. I do not know about you, but I am always amazed when I see a great paint job and remind myself I did it. Jim
