As you can tell from my name, been there, done that. Look at the date of the first posted picture and I can tell you that, 3+ years later, I'm still not done. It should be painted this spring. I would do it again and looking at your car, there's not much left of value to part out so rebuilding it is the only way for you to gain value. Mine was done on a rotisserie but keeping car straight is a problem, especially when it's time to fit the body panels back together.

What makes you think it's a '66 911 ?
Or was that a typo for '76 ?
Do you have the VIN number ?
Could that be a 930 with a carb 3.0 engine ?

i think its a 930 motor,at least thats what the engine block says...the title to the car says 1966,but i cant find the vin # on the car anywhere,i dont know much about porsches,so i dont know where to look.but if the innards of the motor wouldnt have to be worked over too much,i'd like to twin turbo innercool it ......no?

that things a wide body i was thinking it was a 66 that someone put a 6 cylinder motor in . i would say its a 86 to 89 . is the radio ant. in the front glass and is the 3rd brake light in the rear glass . the drivers door jam or the drivers side dash should have the vin . do you have a clear photo of the info label . i take back when i told you to sell it for parts fix it !

The non-turbo 3.0 liters (SC, Carrera 3.0) have 930 case numbers.

The VIN number may also be in the trunk, either on an aluminum plate, or in front of the smuggler's box.
The engine number should be on the right side of the fan housing, close to the timing chain cover.

ok,the rear glass has a third brake light,but theres no vin on the dash or by the smugglers box,the front of the driver side doorjamb has a small plaque with a karmman porsche with a 5 or six digit #.i can take a pic of it.is there any hidden spots for a vin on the car?where the cops check?

Super Rat- that 6 digit number should be the whole VIN- my '66 is 303734. Is yours similar?

ok,i finally got the numbers off the inside front of drivers door jamb. 454478 i dont know if that means much t anyone,could the dealer tell me what year it is?

there should be 12 to 14 character for your vin # the 10th character tells you the year of the car . on an early 911 look for the alloy plate on the front panel or its stamped in the metal behind the fuel tank left side . on later 911's ,993's and 996's its stamped behind the spare tire .

If I remember correctly, this is a '66 912 with a Karmann body.

962, porsche used 6 digit vin until '68.

I think you have a 912 chassis. I am not positive but I think you do. This wouldn't bother me as I have a 912 chassis with the 901 engine in it. Its the same exact body with less options so it ends up being lighter too. I'd fix it as you can buy everything it needs welded back on pretty cheap. I think you could have it together in a couple weeks.

dave . yes i know that porsche vin # were 6 digits untill 68 . and when i first read this post i was thinking it was a 912 with a 6 cyl. 911 motor . but then looking at the pics that were posted . i'm thinking mid 80's ???? i gave that # 454478 to a frend at porsche NA to check . when he talked with me that evening he did not have time to check yet .but did not think it was the vin # ? i will send him an email and see if he had time to check the vin # .

That is a Karmann 912 coupe body from 1966, (4 cly Type 616/36 engine). Take off the lower dash trim under the ashtray and the serial number should be stamped there also. (Porsche built 912 bodies 1966 serial numbers start with 350xxx).

The floor pans, inner and outer rocker panels, both front and rear inner wheel houses, battery tray, gas tank mount, are typical replacement parts, but the spot to really look at is the rear torsion bar tube to the rear wheel house. That area and the torsion bar itself -if that area is bad - the structure of the whole car would be in question.

If you are cutting pans, trays and rocker panels there isn't a lot holding the car together. Best to have it on a jig bench or it will be twisted when done. All the critical dimensions and reference points are in the Factory work shop manual.

If you choose to work around the car replacing floor panels and other parts one at a time the likelyhood of ending with a twisted body is very high. The previously replaced panels will be your reference points and there is no knowing where they are in relation to the critical measured points.
