best rattle-can primer ?
 

I have stripped a well worn front valance down to bare metal and am seeking advice as to what the best steps are to prep for final color coat.
I have searched on "primer" and just ended up being more confused. I welcome suggestions as to how I should continue, through self etch (?), epoxy(?), and primers, and which rattle-cans I should be looking at.
Keep in mind that this is a low profile (literally) panel, and I plan to use a med-build rocker panel spray (3M 05911) before the color coat (custom mixed by PaintScratch)

Sikkens make a nice Etch primer in a can, other then that you're going to need a full set up for epoxy, although I've read that you can get 2 pac in a can now. You push a button on the bottom of the can that mixes the hardener.

There are some 2 pac epoxy primers that can be brushed on, i think Dupont make one?

in the USA sikkens will not sell to peaple if you are not in the repair biz. ! i would opt for transtar's aerosol etching primer part #6183 . thinking that there might be some rust on the panel you striped . but i would not use a spray bomb at all for that repair !

there is no rust.
the piece has been on a stored car for the last 20 years and is actually in decent shape. probably due to the fact that there was at least 3 color layers protecting the outside, and the factory primer still intact on the inside, (which I'm not going to touch - unless there's a reason I should?)

Have you tried UPOL? Re 3M, Are you talking about 3M rubberized undercoat?

you can't paint over rubberizer under coats even with the ones that say you can . it will make your life hell !!!!!!! i like U-POL'S gravi tex it comes in white , gray and black . so you can get a close match to the top coat (paint) . so when you get chips in the paint its harder to see the stone chip protection . like if you use 3m's tan chip gaurd and you have a black car when the black chips you see the tan chip gaurd and it looks like crap ! i also like the U-POL becouse it matches the way porsche does there chip guard . 3m seams to go on to coarse and its harder to change the texture . i'm not big on 3m products there over priced and offer little to no tech support . in all the years i have owned my shop not one rep from 3m ever walked in my door . i see peaple from transtar and u-pol all the time and if you need them i can just call them on there cell phone .

the 3M 05911 is not the rubberized undercoat, and should be fine to paint over.
The local Pep Boyz carries all the primers we're talking about (acid etch, high fill, sandable) in Dupli-Color for a fraction of the cost of the U-Pol and Sikkens. Should I avoid the Dupli-Color products, or are they okay for something low-profile like a front valance? Even though it is low-profile, I don't want to have to do repeat this job on a regular interval.

If I werre you I would use a 2 part epoxy primer like DPLF50 from PPG. On top of that I would use Wurth SKS and top coat that with your color. The SKS is availabel here: http://www.goodspeedmotoring.com/

+1 on the DP##LF from PPG. I'm no pro but would not rattle can anything other than weld-thru primer.

Regarding the 3M 05911, I don't have experience with this but the 3M website says you can paint over it. Sounds like a good idea. Please post how it turns out.
