993 Race Car, Fiberglass body Install...
Few pics of some of the work I've done in last several months hanging complete 993 body on '95 tub. I'll start with some of the pics of making it look a little better than it probably needs to be for race car. First pic is start and few intermediate steps of bumper / flares / fender interface / rear quarter and 2nd/3rd pic is how it turned out.
My weapon of choice in most of this work has been duraglass fiberglass reinforced body filler. ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by JoeMag; 12-28-2007 at 05:58 PM.. |

Nice work, it's gonna look real good at the track.
duraglass is one of my best friends.

Decided to "erase" the corner marker/turn signals. Cut out from back side and fiberglassed from back side. Found masking tape to be great tool for this type of stuff or when making parts mate better using duraglass. Fiberglass or duraglass does not really stick to it so you can easily take off or seperate parts.
Would have been neater to bend piece of tin around opening, but knew I'd probably need to put layer of filler in to make nice so just went easy route with tape. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Good to see it is coming along. Can't wait to see it in person.

Last shot of the 'art work'... GT2 rocker extensions do not mate up with the currve of flares in the rear if you want them to follow the flares, so move masking tape and fiberglass.

John -- thx. Yea, coming along. Hanging the body and work revolving around that took me 2 more mo's than I expected. Now it's time to put stuff in it like plumbing, electrical and motor/trans. ...oh boy....
Micheal -- Here's the wide shots just took them last weekend. Naturally the rear light showed up the day after when there was few inches of snow on the ground. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Dzus fasterners everywhere!
Quick question- are the fasteners on the front holding on tabs that connect to the bumper? If so I have never seen them used like that before. Normally I see them in the bumper with the tab mounted to something else, not the other way around. Looks good though.

yepper on the dzus... everything easily removable. even the front windshield is dzus'ed on. did that after the pic was taken.
Yes, the tabs are in the bumper. See 3rd pic in my 1/2/08 post. I got the idea off an AJR 993RSR and have since seen a few other bumpers like that. |

I'm in the process of installing a quick release body on my racer. Not really sure how it's going. This is my first time and it doesn't look nearly as nice as yours. Couple of questions.
Did you lay the rear 1/4s on top of the sheetmetal or is it flush? I tried making them flush and have gaps all over. Also, do you have any pics with the body panels off? I'm interested in how you have the fasteners mounted and also the brackets. Here's a link to my project: My embarassing bodywork

Armando, there is very little bracing on the rear, only the one is aft of rear wheels. i made my rear quarters and bumper/light assembly into a clip. ...meaning that it comes off in one piece. below are pics of car with body removed. in rear of car there's 4 dzus fasteners; two on lower outer lip and two aft of motor. hope pics below help...

I going to have each piece some off seporately, so I'm going to need more bracing. I see you laid the quarters over the old ones. I decided to make them flush which is probably why mine are coming out so bad. Thanks for the photos.

even if you make them come off seperately, i don't think you'll need more bracing. they just need to be attached well (maybe bumper to quarter like first pic in thread). what i'm saying is you're not going to use the thing without having complete back end so they just need to function as a whole.

What products did you use for your fiberglass projects above. I'm thinking of doing some custom work to my fiberglass bumper but have no experience using fiberglass. I see the key is to use cardboard and masking tape to create shapes. Do you know of any write ups or links?
I have a 964 bumper but want to create some air dams to the oil coolers, much like what you have.

Armando -- i really just learned how to do this by doing. i started by just going to walmart and buying the fiberglass kit they make. maybe few other folks can recommend a book. I imagine there are several out there.
I have purchased fiberglass products from these guys -- http://www.uscomposites.com/ the masking tape/cardboard method is just one i made up. the green filler material is "Duraglass". Kind of a pain to sand, but good stuff. a few of the "pro's" here have recommended it. |
