spray paint question
I re-painted the engine bay of my SC a couple of years ago using a spray can. When unhooking the fuel filter yesterday gasoline spilled on the paint. When I wiped off the gas the paint came with it.
When I painted that area I used acetone to thoroughly clean the area. Any ideas ? Poor paint quality?

Most spray bombs do not have a lot of cross-linking in the paint resins. This means that they are of lower quality and will not cure the same as the more expensive versions. The end result is that they are not tolerant of harsh chemicals (like gasoline or other solvents).
Of course, I should ask... What type of paint was it? Acrylic, enamel, etc? enamels are usually pretty durable. The typical acrylic paints are not very durable for this application.

I think it was acrylic enamel. I gave the paint shop the code for my paint and he mixed it and gave me the spray bomb. The paint was Sherwin Williams.

with out a catalyst (hardeners) enamels are whats called reversible . with spray cans you can't add a hardener so it will stay reversible for its life . if it was a laquer based paint then its always reversible becouse there is no catalyst offerd for a laquer product . your prep work was probably ok all thow acetone is not a good prepaint cleaner . acetone tends to push contaminates deeper into the old substrate (finish) . BASF glasurit recommends always using a proper pre paint cleaner .
