Overspray Removal Advice Needed
I've got a 1977 Porsche 911S with random overspray that got on car when the lower front valence was repaired at a body shop about 10 years ago. The overspray is light and mainly visible due to a lack of luster in the roof and fenders, it is not oxidation. The car is a solid color, sort of a creamy yellow, it is the original paint overall except the front valence. I'm thinking about wet sanding it with 2000 grit, then polishing the area with a foam pad. I've heard bad things about wool pads on rotary polishing machines, I'd rather have light overspray than burn through the paint. Several folks have recommended the Makita 9227 polisher. Any suggestions?
Also, does anyone know if Porsche used clear coat on their solid paint jobs in 1977? |

1977 should be single- stage paint, ie no clear coat. Clear coats started use in the late 80's I believe. I think starting with some wetsanding then moving to rubbing compound/finer polishes would be just fine. Maybe others can recommend exact products or grits.
Wool is one of the more abrasive polishing pads, you use this for cutting through heavy oxidation or removing scratches. Might even be okay for your overspray application, I'm not sure. They also sell varying grades of foam pads with different levels of abrasion, so your polishing will be a combination of foam abrasion plus the grit in the polish. Most people recommend starting with a dual action polisher because it's harder to burn through the paint, I bought a rotary from Harbor Freight for the price (35$ or so). - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices I haven't answered everything I know but I try not to make suggestions specifics that I don't know.
