Thanks Einar!

You're right about that. I still haven't seen your new car...

OK. Here's an update. The car is back on the road. There's a punch list still - windshield wipers, mirrors, still needs another polish, few minor trim items, etc.

But, it can now resume it's role as morning starbucks-getter.

Stay tuned to this space, though. There's a couple of major projects coming up. First, it's getting an air-conditioner replacement. It will also get a complete suspension and engine makeover next. Probably starting in a month or two.

I don't want to hear any whining about putting an ac in the car. This is Houston, not San Diego, Denver or Seattle. It was 104 with 55% humidity yesterday at 11 in the morning. I am old and this is not a race-car.

I'll post better pics after I get some of the items off the punch list - like mirrors and polishing...

Thanks. The fiberglass flares, in and of themselves, would have been fine. It was bad information on the bonding chemicals that did them in. I agree that the steel flares will be better though.

Ok, awesome. Thanks for the response. A few more questions...

We're taking our car down to bare metal, most of the paint has been removed now while we do the ugly job of replacing rusted out panels. The car is basically sitting bare in the garage...

1.) Would you suggest sealing it with something while the welding work is done? Maybe a light coat of something? I haven't noticed any surface rust appearing but then who knows.

2.) Are all primers created equally or is there one you suggest using? My fear is that I spray with a primer that isn't compatible with the topcoat.

3.) What is your basic paint layup? Metal -> primer -> single-stage? Can I just spray down primer to the metal and be good? I've heard people use the term "epoxy sealer", stuff like that.

4.) How many coats of primer do you lay down?

Thanks for the advice man, this is really all new to me.

Sorry I didn't see this.

1.) I would suggest using a weld-through primer. I didn't though and it turned out ok.

2.) Here's something I learned. Use primer, base-coat and clear coat from the same mfg. Sikkens, Dupont, PPG, whatever - one brand all the way through.

3.) Single-stage paint sucks. It's from 1945. Use two stage - base coat, clear coat. The clear coat is like wrapping your car in super shiny armor. Primer on metal is fine. That's what it's for. Epoxy sealer/primer is typically high build. The high build primer is used to add more material and allow you to obsessively smooth sand the surface.

4.) Dunno exactly. At least four complete high build shots. Some areas were sanded and re-primed multiple times to get the car perfect. It's a show car paint job so it's seriously ocd. The reflection in the paint is sharp enough that you can read the spec plate printed on the overhead neon lights and all the reflections match up between body panels. It was a LOT of work. Months...

Here are some old pix of 993 mufflers that I installed in/on my last V8 project. Pretty straightforward. Also attach image of my latest project of a 993 3.6 that I have just installed into my 86 Carrera. Your deal sure looks well done. Congrats.

Thanks Eldon!

That looks like a pretty good way to do it.

White headliner. I'm considering a fancy-ish tan leather interior. Something between hot-rod and Singer. I don't really know. I'm open to suggestions.

You should check out Keystone Brothers over on Fulton street.. They stock EVERYTHING for auto interiors...We were just there looking for black leather material for our RS..It was really kinda cool when they brought out a cow sized hide to check out!
