Fender Flange Rust Repair
I thought I would load some pictures for future reference if anyone is going to be cutting into the fender mounting flange.
I found the flange that holds the fender to the body was rusted thru, as well as a section of the inner wheel well along the top edge just below where the fender is mounted to the body. The steel line you see inside the rusted channel is the front hood latch release cable. ![]() I sourced a part from a donor vehicle . There was some confusion during the process of my explaining what I needed and what my supplier actually cut for me. A part that I had hoped would be all one piece had been cut wrong and subsequently arrived in two pieces a few days apart. I decided to deal with it the way it was. In the end I think it turned out OK but was a lot more work had I just sourced another piece. This photo shows the mounting flange (first part recieved) just resting on the top of the wheel well section. ( shipped later) ![]() Ready for install ![]() ![]() I was going to leave the top edge of the flange intact, after looking at it I cut it off. I seperated the two sides of the donor piece and used that for the top section. ![]() I cut the bottom section a little short and had to add another small piece. Experience is great once you have it. Getting it is the tricky part. ![]() ![]() If I were to do this again I would have never used the two pieces like I did, but that's where the experience comes into play. It would have probably been easier just to fabricate a piece. Of course, at the time of this posting, I have had a little bit of experience pounding and welding sheetmetal that I didn't have when I started the job. Anyway, hopefully these pictures will help someone with their project. Even if it shows you how NOT to do it.

weld thru primer resists the heat of welding and protects the back side from further rusting.
usually has a very high zinc or aluminum content as opposed to pigment.

I was instructed to use a very thin film of primer when using the weld thru. You don't need much for it to do its job. If you get it to thick it'll splatter when the welder hits it. Little fire balls will be launching left and right.
