Equipment for painting/ body work
Getting ready to buy a compressor for the garage. I haven't started the resto yet on the 911t. My work on this project won't start for quite a while so as for now I'm educating myself on what I need. I do have some painting and bodywork books which explain a little. However the total setup and what works and doesn't work together isn't completely clear.
I have a few questions first as to the equipment necessary to be able to do some body work and painting. If I misuse some terminology forgive me as I think I may hold a few misconceptions about the capacity of the equipment in general,.. i.e.- cfm, psi, etc. My assumtions are that I probably want to go with hvlp, unless someone can verify that the eastwood concours type setup ( is that lvlp?) is even worth trying. I scored from the neighbor- 3 Hankison airdryers with the following specs (actually it's 2 working dryers and the other one is questionably functional- according to him-he had it for parts for the other two if needed.) HANKISON COMPRESSED AIR DRYER Model 8010ss Rated Capacity 10 SCFM @ 100 psig @ 100F inlet air MWP 175 psig Min/Max ambient 35 F (2 C) / 110F (43 C) VAC 115 Phase 1 Hz 60 Unit Fla 3.3 Compressor Fla 2.9 Fan motor amps 0.5 Max fuse/ckt breaker size 15 Fan motor watts 4 Min/Max volts Min - 104 Max 126 vac Compressor HP 1/6 Compressor LRA 18 Min. ckt ampacity 4.1 Refrigerant R-12 Refrigerant charge 6.5 oz Refrigerant suction pressure 33 psig Factory test pressure 235 psig Hi/Lo refrig. side Now what stands out so far to me is the 10scfm and the part about r-12-am I going to to b able to get this recharged somewhere?, will it even hold a charge? Is the part about the scfm limiting me to that as output volume? OKAY the compressor I'm thinking of is and IR 5hp 60 gallon single stage-18.1 scfm @ 90 or a 20gal 2hp single stage 5scfm @90. THe smaller compressor was if the eastwood concours type gun (lvlp?) route is possible. So numer one were the airdryers a waste of money? or can I use them?-with which setup? which compressor is the best choice? NOt a big loss if the dryers are junk I hardly paid anything for them and a lincoln welder with gas setup, clamps auto-dark helmet, tools and more. Someone set me straight, please. ![]()

I've got that IR compressor you are looking at and bought mine for the same reason. You can see pics of my restoration on this site. I also bought a Devilbiss 670 Plus gun.
I didn't have a dryer like you have and will defer t oothers. I used the standard water seperator and "toilet pare roll" dryer and it worked fine down here in houston.

Thanks, Bob.
I guess you mean th 60 gal., right? yeah, it looks lie a lot for the money-every site i've seen it on has nothing but good reviews. Can you provide a link to the dryer you speak of? HOpefully mine aren't total trash. I was excited when I got them. From what I've been told most of the problems people experience with paint prime etc. have a lot to do with water in the air. Anyone else?
