Unusual 944 body question

This likely isn't the ideal venue for this thread, but it wasn't all that welcome in the last place I tried, and I really admire the skill demonstrated in the projects I've seen here.

Basically, in the image attached, the stereo installation I'm considering would require the round cut-out to be moved higher (to roughly where the red line is, give or take):

The best guidance I've heard so far is that the area around the door is designed to preserve the door's shape in a collision, so that it will still open. With that in mind, what are your thoughts on cutting this opening, then welding a plate over the area with a 3.5" hole in it?

Thanks in advance!

being the current owner of 8 porsches and 5 of them 944's ( 944's are like pop corn you just can't have one ) and a 30 year body and paint person i would say its fine to cut that out ! just DO NOT cut into the sides of the boxed area . if you ever had a 944 cut open there you would see just how its made and how strong it is .

I really appreciate your perspective. I felt around in there and the sheet metal doesn't feel as though it touches the braces behind it in the area I want to cut. I will stay well clear of the boxed sections.

What I'm considering is trimming out a rectangle, then welding in a plate with a 3" circle located about 1.25" higher, instead.

Again, thanks for your help.

Charlie..

Is that "revised" location to accommodate a speaker?

It is, indeed. I'm trying to minimize path length difference in the mid range drivers of a Dynaudio 3-way set:

The challenge is in positioning the speakers such that they work together without being in the way, and if I can recess them into that void a little more, I won't be kicking them every time I get in or out.

I'm proceeding with caution...
