934 conversion
Good morning Pelican bodymen. I need your help. I am looking to convert my 1986 911 turbo to 934 bodywork soon (August-September 2010) The problem I am having is that I cannot get a rough ballpark estimate for the work. I understand that without looking at the car and glass parts it is difficult to give numbers. However, I do not know if this is a 3K or 10K job and I do not want to trailer the car to a shop without at least having some idea. I AM NOT CHEAP. I have already spent an inordinate amount of money on the car (haven't we all) and want it done right. Can someone give me a realistic range to perform the following:

Cut factory steel flares
prep and install glass 934 flares (previously painted and hung on another car)
prep and install glass 934 valance, DP extended tail and Rennspeed glass bumper blades
delete flag mirror holes, prep and install glass 935 mirrors
Car is Guards Red, close to perfect paint. 35,000 mile car

Pictures of car and BBS E50 wheel centers that Rod Graff is building 17x11 and 17x 13 wheels with for the car.

If the glass parts don't require a large amount of rework I'd say 5-6k would do the job correctly.

That is a truly beautiful car!!! Are you sure you want to cut it up? That said, it will make a gorgeous 934!

Thank you. I have been waffling for about three years, and have finally decided to take the plunge. She is so far from stock now that I'm not going back anyway...

If it were me, there is no way I would cut that car up. Now if it was an old clapped out turbo or an SC I would understand. There is something about a really clean, properly set up 930! Just my $.02.

Please do not cut that car!
Why don't you buy a Porsche that you can rescue, instead of cutting that beautiful car?
Also you will need to do lots of engine modifications to pull the bigger wheels.
You don't want to be all show and no go, do you?

It depends on what you're looking for. If you paint the fiberglass with no work, it should be pretty cheap. If you want a show car paint job, it could cost a fortune.

I have a friend that did a race car build. He had all the same work done you're mentioning and he had a fiberglass roof installed. I think he paid $4k to have it done. It was painted in single stage paint. It's a great looking race car.

But, it's a little lumpy and orange peel shows pretty bad up close. In his case, he didn't care - it wasn't what he was looking for.

That's an awfully pretty car though. It's also a real 930. I think maybe if I were you I'd start with a 911SC or something less pristine. It won't add to the cost to start with a car that needs a paint job.

Thanks for all your thoughts guys. Looks like the car is going under the skilled hands of the forum's own Kevin Mentzer at Automotive Innovations. Kevin is the gentleman who performed the bodywork on Jack Olsen's BBII among other beauties. Rest assured that this will be no hack job and that the removed portions of the flares will be saved so that in 40 years the new owner can restore to original if he decides. The motor is a maxed out CIS putting out approximately 400 HP to the wheels and and the target weight is sub 2500 lbs. Im not worried about all show and no go. The suspension is comprised of RSR coil overs, 935 front and rear, and monoballs throughout. She will scoot.

Hey man how are ya!

Ping me if you're still looking for a shop. I have two east coast buds that have had a couple of interesting conversions completed recently. One is an S/T clone the other being a GT2 clone build on a 993TT.

Both were very pleased with the quality vs. money spent.
