Body panel sealer / adhesive

I have disassembled my '84 for paint. Most of the panels, especially the fenders are bonded to the body with a pliable seam sealer / adhesive.
Is there anything special about the sealer? Does anyone have good recommendations for a brand of sealer?

Thanks
Seth

I got mine from Pelican. Comes in a role, kinda like soft putty.

I plan to do more front end work this winter so for the past spring/summer I've had both fenders on without the sealer. fits/works fine.

I noticed when I peeled the sealer off it seemed to have maintained a lot of moisture over the years and was quite rusty underneath.

For permanent seams I use Sikaflex 227 which is a polyurethane (cures using the moisture in the air). It's applied with a normal calking gun and once cured can only be removed mechanically (scraping/sanding).

I think you're after a sealer than releases? Sailchef is right. It's normally referred to as "Dumdum", and any good paint shop can supply it. It comes on a roll with backing and is like "bluetac" in consistency. It's not really a 'sealer' as such - the substrate (paint) should be applied underneath properly to avoid rust.

I did not put it back on when I restored my car because as sailchef said, It seems to hold moisture and rust forms between the panels.
There are much better products out there that would work much better IMHO.

The soft putty like stuff you find on the front fenders is also called dum-dum and such. RV dealers also carry it.

ribbon sealer 3M # 08611 , sausage pack tipe urethane seam sealers (like transtar's #4112 and 4122 )work best for the fender to apron seams . you would in no way want to use a 2 part seam sealer for the fenders .

It is not the best to use the "dum Dum" tpye sealer as it will absorb and retain water.

You can buy a Byutal type tape sealer from an RV repair shop (not the Clay based product) for about $8.00 a roll.
