911SC Power Windows
I have a 1982 911SC. The drivers side window keeps falling off the track when I engage the power window switch and the window invariably slides down. After removing the door panel I notice that the track goes up and down in a fairly smooth and linear plane ut at some point the window comes off the track.

firmly attached to the rail. If the rail is not rusted, causing it to bulge and lose structural grip, and if the rubber inset is still pliable, not hard and cracked, clean up the glass, clean the rubber, add a slather of "window channel adhesive" from the body shop supply house, or some concoction of two part adhesive you trust to attach the two, roll the window up, and let it set. i remember a two faced molding type adhesive strip was also available, but they were hard to crimp for a succesful bite.

bedding the glass into the channel with windshield urethane works well.

Just purchased a beat up 1983 911 sc Targa for restoration. both doors have had the panels off by an idiot PO.
Question on windows. Are they supposed to automatically open when you open the door? if so this is not working. When I close the door with the window full up it closes on the outside of the weatherstrip. when I roll the window down then up it closes inside the strip. It is the same on both driver and passenger doors. |

roadster49 - No they do not open automatically. If you can get the windows to seal by lowering then raising you are in pretty good shape. I suspect you could adjust the upward travel so they close perfectly when you shut the door but if it were my car (81 Targa), and they sealed that good, I would not touch them. I am so tired of less than perfect Targa top seals that I would rather struggle with CIS air leaks.
vlindell - Welcome to the forum. You can use the channel even if it is not pristine (e.g., bulging some as Series900 mentions). Remove the regulator. Clean it up good and kill the rust - squish it back into shape so it provides some tension - you be the judge on the structural integrity - and use the products mentioned. I personally would not use a two part adhesive as you may want to take it apart again. |

Thanks for the info. i just got this car, and have been unable to get it started, so it is outside and I did not take the targa top off. I suspect it needs new weather stripping. Here are the pictures of the side windows. The door panels have all been taken off in the past, and makes me wonder what they were trying to do. The windows go up higher than the rubber window receiver. When closing the doors the glass hits outside and leaves an air gap.

The weather stripping can be adjusted by loosening some screws and moving the entire piece outboard from the center of the car. You need a good quality medium size phillips-head screwdriver and it can be a bit of a hassle to find the right angle to mate with the screw.
On my car I have dinked with many of the adjustments but still am frustrated. However, I have not really focused on the many posts and threads here to develop a serious plan of attack - and then stick to it. Search in the "advanced search" section and enter something like "adjusting targa windows" and then read the posts. The answer is in one of these forums. |
