dent repairs

i need to ask you guys . we were talking at brake yesterday about how the people were repairing the dents in there cars when you can't get to the back side of the panels to bang them out . are you guys spending 300 plus dollars on uni-spoters ? or drilling a 1/8 inch hole and side-hammering them out ?

the reason i'm asking is not to say its right or wrong ! but you people that are restoring cars must be pulling out dents as will ? i have about 30 years in the biz. with alot of years as a BASF paint tech rep. porsche service rep. and shop owner . i was told many times that i should write a how to book on body repair , painting and buffing . so i i'm ! i will be putting in the book all porsche chassis measurements . color codes , tools , ext ext . but i would like to know is how the home repair guy is pulling out dents ? are you buying 300 plus dollar un-spoters ? your input would help me out alot !!!!!

Frankly you can get them at harbor Freight for half that price, they work well. Can use a MIG welder to spot weld on a screw or bolt to pull, works fine too. Not drilling any holes!

If you can afford it get a quality stud welder. As in most purchases you get what you pay for. I have found that cheap stud welders tend to have less heat control and burn through occasionally leaving a hole. No problem if you have a Mig or Tig handy. But its extra time and work. That's why some stud welders cost more. They actually save a body shop money.

i ordered one just to see how good they are . i do like my uni-spoter it does wiggle wire ,clip posts and pull studs . but at a price of 599 i'm not thinking the home user will buy one .

believe it or not you can even use the stud welder w/o a stud to do spot shrinks.
+1 on the harbour freight item; $99 and it comes with a puller and studs.

yes you can but i still like the way i have been doing heat shrinking for the past 30 years . jewelers tip on the torch . one chapter of the book is about tools and were a home restorer can source them .

thats a good sign . i will give you one for free you can pay the shipping . i do hope they sell good . i'm looking at the 20 to 25 dollar soft cover book . i think the chassis measurments would be worth that alone . then with the color codes . i will add in all the 999 porsche codes i have . at this time i have 26 or 27 of them ? and what to do and what not to do when refinishing . this book will not have metal and body work how to that will be the next one i write . but it will have one chapter on all tools but focusing on tools for prep ,paint and buffing .

Reading Wayne's posts, he's pretty clear he makes very little profit on the effort of his two books. But the web is it's own vehicle these days and there's enough websites and online P-car clubs to canvas that I think self published "How To" for the right price shouldn't leave out you of pocket. Especially as these old cars don't get younger and spares get rarer.

To address the original question; I have an H&S Stinger. But I'm not exactly a hobbyist.

That's an awesome project 962porsche. I'm sure lots of people will be interested in the book.

I'm sure I'll buy a copy!

I had a Spritzenagle until it was stolen a couple years ago. I replaced it for the time being with a Harbor Freight unit.

Thanks for all of your informative posts 962porsche. I love reading them.

I will buy one of your books when it comes out. Keep us posted.

i got the harbor freight stud welder the other day . used it on a junk panel . well i know why its only a 100 bucks . its very cheaply made and can over weld the pull studs ez and the slide hammer will slip on the studs with real hard pulls . is it worth the 100 bucks ???? yes i would say so . as long as the quality is not less than this one .

As a diy'er I find that the most confusing issue is the number of different ways to accomplish the same thing; also, the different products that are compatable with each other.

Putting it all on a CD with actual video demonstrations would be a good supplement to the book.

Make it simple, and use plain english so the uninformed can understand it.

Just my $.02

Put me down for a copy.

dent repair

Also looking forward to you book. Please include me for a book purchase.
Purchased a stud welder a while back, very disappointed!! Just as easy to weld the head of a nail to center of dent area and use a small jerking tool and patiently work out the dent after bracing area surrounding dent so as to not 'bulge' undented areas.
