Wrinkled quarter repair?

Do you think these quarters can be pulled back out straight or will then need to be replaced? I plan to install steel flares so a good bit of the wrinkle will be cut out but not all of it. I was told the inner panels do not have wrinkles nor the frame rails so all the damage is on the outer quarter panels. The car rolled down a parking garage and hit a wall which is what caused the damage.

Thanks
Mike

i would like to see the door to QTR gaps on the left and right sides of the car and also the rear bumper . i would say its a good bet you will need to give the rails a up and out pull . you almost never see buckles in qtrs like that from a bumper hit with out any damage to the rails . i would pull off the bumper to see the real damage were the bumper shocks mount up . the left qtr looks like its down in the back there also loks to be a buckle under the qtr glass . i also would not be surprised to find that the rear lid would also not have some damage around the latch and stricker . i would write that repair for new QTRs , bumper , rebar , bumper shocks , lights , set up and pull . tear down to see extra damage . and get the insurance co. back out for a supplement for the hidden damage .

Here is the best I can do right now. I am buying this car as a roller so any work that is needed will be done by me. Like I said I plan to instaled turbo flares and back date this car to a 73 RSR. Here are pictures of the rear frame rails which are nice and wrinkle free but i guess the very rear parts could have some damage that is not seen in the pictures. most everything on the back of the back of the car will be replaced with RSR stuff but I wanted to see how hard it would be to pull the quarters back where they belong.

Thanks
Mike

Anymore advice on this damage? I am going to look at the car and if the inner structure of the car is not damaged, I hope to be bringing it home Thursday.

you have to look at the crumple zones to see if there is any damage . the photos you posted are not the 1st place i would be lookng for damage . the 1st would be under the bumper beackets then because the left qtr looks like its pushed down i would look on the under side of the left rail for a buckle you may have to run your hand down the rails and feal for a dip or a bulge . a car dosent take a hit and buckle the qtrs with out doing some kind of damage to the rails . there are many things i would look at if i were the one looking at the car . i would like to see a photo for the door to qtr gaps with a straight on view . i would like to see a view of the rear lid closed and looking at that straight on as well . then i would pull the rear bumper and look for damage to the rear body panel . if there are any buckles on the qtrs around the qtr glass then there is rail damage . if a car takes a straight hit to the bumper and there is no over ride damage (over ride is when the hit rides over the top of the bumper ) and qtrs get buckles the the rails in some way have been compromised . it will need a set up and pull along with new qtrs .

Thanks for the info. I will be going to look the car over and if not real bad bring it home. Any ideas on the amount of time a body shop would need to pull something like this if the rails are bent down a bit? I have no issue with installing new quarters myself but I do not have the means to pull the frame. I say that but then again I can normally figure things out. hahaha Thanks again for the info on what to look for.

mike you would be better off to straighten the quarters theyare not that bad any decent shop could do that for less than the price of one quarter panel, dont cut your quarters off its the last thing you want to do,,, beware of who you bring your car to though,, the body shop industry is full of jokers,, self procaimed specialists

and mike your 911 is a small tub with a big piece of sheet metal surrounding it shped into a quarter panel its an easy repair it just needs a little ingenuity to make them straight again and there will be no wrinkles to cover a litlle polyester filler that all i assure you you nedto find someone with the correctt clamping system fo your car,,look around dont be bull****ed by a bull****er,find a seasoned proffesional ,call your local PCA chapter and ind out who does there work in GA, get referalls first it a simple job for the right person wityh the motor already removed that can be roughed out in a couple days mayb 8 hrs max at 60 ph f the shop is pricey maybe 800 i would say 500 should be enough i am speaking with 35 yrs expeience

Thank you for the info. I too think it can all be pulled and massaged back into place pretty easy and I am not a body man by trade. There is some bulging on the drivers side frame rail just in front of the shock towers but not real bad. I have contacted a local body shop to find out an old friend of mine still works there and He is going to check it out for me on Monday. He has been working a frame machine for over 15 years and after talking today he thinks it should be an easy fix as well. I want to see what they think about it as they have straightened up a few 911s over the years. I am looking forward to what I find out at the Body shop on Monday.

Thanks again for the info as I too think this will be a pretty easy fix.

piece of cake mike,, just have em rent the right clamps to secure the care to the machine or go somewhere else, most frme machines companies will rent any clampng system,,,thats the biggest thing dont let him tie the car down any other way youwill compromise the tub and the suspension without the correct tie downs 911 is in a class of its own

I will make sure they use the right clamps for sure. This is valuable info for sure and I will insist on them doing it correct.

Took the car to the body shop today and got a quote. Your estimate on hours where spot on with them quoting 8 hours to get it in good shape again. I am just having them pull the frame rail and not worry so much with getting the quarters perfect as most of the quarter will be cut to make way for flares soon anyhow. The good thing is I guess shop rates down here in GA are much lower than up north as I was quoted $300-$350 to do the work. I also asked about the Porsche clamping system and they assured me that they had the correct system to hold the this car down and have worked in a number of them over the years. Monday I take it in to get all straightened out.

when you add turbo look flares you will be only cutting about 3 to 4 inches of the outter lip of the wheel opening . so most of the qtr will stay . being the cost of new qtrs are only about 700 dollars each . i would still opt to replace them of it was on my car .by replacing them there would be no body filler used or just a skim coat on the rocker to qtr seam . if the car came into my shop i would write for a new right qtr . i don't do work for the run of the mill insurance co's they would and don't insure cars that we work on but i would also ask for a new left qtr and in most cases would get it . but because your looking at an out of pocket pay i could see why you would want to save the money . your labor is free ! labor rates are not the same from state to state or even for deferent parts of the state you may live in . as a ex-porsche engineer in no way should a porsche ever be put on a drive on bench . there are no good clamps that will work for a real hard pull . thats from porsche ! but for a hit like your its is ok . we do have one drive on rack but for the most part we only use our celette benches . after a 2.5 hour set up time your looking at a 5.5 hour pull time . for a shop to make money they will do that job in about 4 hours total . about an hour set up and 3 to do the pull for real time on the job .

Maybe I made it sound like they were not going to fix the quarters but they are in fact going to fix them to the point of not affecting the integrity of the paint. I would like to get them as straight as they can without messing the paint up so I can drive it as is for a little while. They will be able to get he quarters nice but they said not flawless.

I really love the look of the 73 RSR and had planed to do a back date but it might be a little while as I will be collecting parts as i have the funds. I am not dead set on it but I sure would like to have a nice moder RSR clone.

The engine and trans were removed to be built up for a high HP car at a shop up in SC. I ended up getting the G50 with the roller as they could use a G50 from an earlier car on their project. I am not sure i got a real good deal but I think i did ok. I paid $7500 for the roller with G50 with factor LSD, injection, ignition, and exhaust off the car as well. If I had the longblock and the cooling system I would be set.

well mike, sounds like a good deal to me, and leaving your quarters on is a better choice, the factory has leaded the seams and a little polyester is not gonna hurt your car, much better built at the factory than a body shop replacement, good luck with your car,, ive got some rear bumper parts for that car maybe the center and one of the ends, i will check,,peace bro BTW there areplenty of benches that have the correct clamping system for your car, i own a continental and i can get proper clamps for anything, porsche dealers dont even use cellette machine anymore,,, they are dinasors worst towers ive ever used, dedicated bench is old school,, takes way to much time measuring systems are the way to go

If you have some bumper parts your willing to part with let me know. I need the cover for sure and it would be nice to replace the aluminum bumper as well being it did get bent a little. the bumper shocks seem to be ok but maybe once they are compressed they are no good? I need all the rear lights as they were all busted.

Thanks
Mike

Here are some better pictures of the car. Its in pretty nice shape but would need a repaint even if the quarters had no damage.

all authorized porsche body shops at dealers have to use celette benches for there cars as does M.Benz too . people should not give bad addvice about things they don't know about . i just called an old freind that still works for porsche and was told that celette is still the authorized frame bench for porsche !!!! and no you would not want to mess with the lead on the seams ? what lead ? a porsche C2 has no leaded seams ! so i gess what it comes down to is if you don't have the knowladge to work on porsches and frame benches that cars like ferrari ,lambo, benz , porsche authorize then maybe you should'nt !
