Interim rust prevention
Thanks to all for the knowledge that is freely shared on this forum!
I am a slow, slow worker on a 911 restoration. I am starting to work on the body. I have most removeable parts removed. I plan on grinding / sanding / blasting the worst spots, then welding in patches. However, it may be 30 to 40 days between grinding an area smooth and ready to weld, and the actual welding day. I am concerned about rust build-up on bare metal here in North Carolina. Should I spray the bare area with a rattle can primer when finished with the prep and then just quickly grind this off to etch / prime when that phase begins? What brand or type of spray should be used for this interim protection? Just so you know the time scale of my restoration, I first applied rustoleum to the front lip during a rust repair in 1975. thanks. Rick |
You can buy SEM or other quality etching primer in a rattle can at a local auto paint store. It's a good idea to use that over bare metal.
As your post implies, you need to prep and paint in no more than a few days. Some newer primers are "self healing" meaning they will flow to smooth their own surface over time and you have to sand again before the color coat or it could come off in sheets. I've seen that happen. Not pretty. |
If the car is under cover and not getting wet, Picklex20 (google it). I found it fantastic during my resto.

Note from Picklex20 website.
16) Can any primer be used? Most of the primers can be used except Self Etching Primer. |
i used picklex 20 in my shop a couple of times . it seamed to work ok but i did not like it much . the reason they don't want you using an etch primer over it is that it will not stick to the picklex20 . its the same with using an etch primer under products like polyester spray fillers aka feather fill . it does not stick to an etch primer . it will stick for a year or so then it will delaminate . my self i stick to one paint system and use only that system . if i have rust i sandblast it . if there are holes from rust i cut and weld a patch in or replace the panel . when i sandblast a hole car i then etch prime the hole car ASAP. do the body work over the etch primer then spray on an other coat of etch primer then go over that with glasurits 285-60 filler primer .
