Keep a black car black or change color??
I have an 84 Carrera that has paint issues. The car is a factory black car, and it had a respray roughly 10 years ago that is beginning to suffer in some spots. I am putting together parts for a non-widebody IROC conversion, and I am considering changing colors...I really didn't want a black car to begin with, but it was such a bargain that I couldn't be picky on color.
I have always thought that Porsche sold so many black cars, that it could be looked at as basically a blank slate and a color change won't hurt value too much . I am doing some lightening and IROC bumpers all around anyway, so will I have already destroyed any remaining "original value"? Just looking for a few opinions here...Color I am considering is Audi's Aviator Grey... The car: ![]() The bumpers: ![]() The color I am considering:

This strikes me about right...maybe without the two-tone. These cars look good in every color, I swear!

I think the car looks great as it is. Maybe add a duck. But I must say that Audi color is pretty cool. Either way I think it will look great.
EDIT: I don't like the third pic though. The stripes are ok but the black bumper and black rims look awful. Just my .02 Last edited by drcoastline; 01-24-2012 at 05:30 PM.. |

Uncle Scott, I have the twin of your car it's an 86. I have your exact same scenario. I never liked black much and I always wanted a grand prix white 911. The black car had a rebuild and many new parts at a pretty good price. Now the dilemma, change colors ? I think it does affect value to the true enthusiast. Cost of a quality paint job, 5-10 k? Now I see all the other unique original colors in blues, greens etc. They look great and when we go on our Porsche runs , they are the cars people migrate to. That being said, the bright colors seem to get old quick, my bro had a yellow corvette, I got tired of the bright color. The color you are considering is very nice. The bottom line is, its your car and if that's the color you truly love, go for it. The true enthusiast I'm sure will say its going to reduce value by respraying a different color especially if its not a Porsche color. I honestly didn't buy my car for an investment. Good luck and I'm sure you'll make the right decision. Tim

I forgot to mention, I love the look you're going for with bumpers. Your polished rims also look very nice, I'm wanting to do that to mine. It's funny not liking black and when I see your car and actually how good it looks. Tim

I agree that those pictures make the black car look good. Another problem I had when buying it was that I bought it on a rainy day, and the black looked so good with water beaded up on it. I couldn't walk away from it even if it was my least desireable colored 911. Thanks for the responses guys!
