need some education on paint.

The time is nearing for me to get my 944 painted. I'm on a budget of around $800 for my materials (paint). I'm unsure of which brand of paint to buy, how much I'll need and what all I need. I'm not expecting a show car job just looking to get a decent job. My car was guards red but now is pink/ red/ white. We are going to completely disassemble the car and paint all the parts off the car. I will be helping the painter preparing the car through the whole process. I have been looking at sem paint? Also does anyone make a kit were I can buy the paint, primier, reducer all at once? I would like to have guards red for the repaint but as long as its red and close to the original color so we don't have to jam the car I'm not picky. Thanks in advance for the info.

First let me say I am not a professional painter, just a serious hobbyist.

I've had good luck with Diamont products made by BASF. Your guards red was probably a single stage paint (not base coat/clear coat) as were most of the cars I've painted, but I opted to use base/clear on my repaints. I found the two stage process to be very forgiving, especially for someone like me without a paint booth. The Diamont color coats lay on especially nice, and if you go with the non-metalic guards red, you can sand any imperfections before shooting the clear without messing up any metal flake (which you don't have). Also, clear coat is very easy to sand and buff to a mirror finish.

I would go to a local auto paint supply store and they will fix you up with everything you need. They know what products work with the specific paint brands so you don't get any wierd reactions from non-compatible primers/sealers etc.

My local paint store has been an invaluable resource for me.

Good luck.
