When I was at the Body shop, I noticed that they apply something to the metal prior to painting etc to "restore" the factiry corrision resistance.

One of my shops uses a green coating while a second one uses a copper colored material. Does anyone know what these are and is it something that can be applied for home repairs?

because you realy have offered no info other than colors it would be very hard to say for sure but my guess would be it's just an e-type primer . epoxy or etch .
i have stated this many times in the past any bare metal spot bigger than the size of a US QUARTER DOLLAR . you will want to spray a coat of E-primer down 1st .
the copper is most likely a weldable zinc primer . you would only want that were there is two or more panels that come together and over lapping .

Thanks, you are confirming what I expected.

While I can get the Copper Weldthru product from SEM, I am at a loss of where I can get rattle cans of the e-primer. Any ideas?

I do not have a "real" spray setup for spot repairs, only access to preval units and an air brush. For the forseeable future, my ability to do more then apply by hand, air brush or use rattle cans are my only choices but I want to to the best job possible witht he tools I have.

there are many supplyers of etch primers in spray can form .
BASF has one that works good . it would be RM's AM700 .
SEM also offers etch primes in spray cans . black 39673 , gray 39683 and green 39693 .
all 4 of them work good .
i should add when it comes to using etch primers more is not better . you only want one or two med coats .
