Removing Tape from Paint

My 1970 VW Bus has old, dried, crumbling clear plastic tape on the roof from where the PO used it to seal the Sunroof.

I have the Sunroof working and now need to remove the tape. what solvents can I use to loosen the remants of the tape? Just rubbing mineral spririts onthe tape and scraping with a plastic scraper does not seem to work.

Would another solvent be better? I really do not want to strip the original paint, just get the plastic tape off. Perhaps something like MEK, acetone, goo gone, xylene or something else?

Thanks!

depending on just how ling it has been on the roof ? you could just a product like RM's 900 .
what you want to do is put the car in the shade , get a old towel lay it over the tape area and then soak the towel with the 900 . let the towel just sit on the taped area for a long ass time . always keep the towel soaked in the 900 . over an hour or 2 /3 it should eat into the packaging tape . then you can remove the old tape and glue from it . you would not want to use any thing like acetone it will in time eat into the finish .

962 porsche:

Thanks.

I do not know how long but it look like it has been on there for a very loooong time! It is really stuck on. When I am able to get a bit off, it breaks into small pieces.

I looked at the MSDS for RM 900 Pre Cleano and it looks to be Paint thinner (stoddard solvent), IPA and a bit of naptha. Maybe I can just use some my mineral spirits, add some IPA and soak it.

If not, I can always get some 900.

I've always had good results with eucalyptus oil. The natural volitiles seem to gently eat most glue remains.

And it smells nice

3M™ Adhesive Remover works well...just need to figure out how to get the product on the sticky side of the tape. It will soak through paper tape...although I'm unsure how it will transfer through the "plastic" tape
