Deck Lid/Spoiler Repaint Advice
Snagged a beautiful low miles 89 Targa in Guards Red. No spoiler decklid. Being a spoiler guy I sourced a perfect Carrera decklid and original spoiler in a brown metallic color. I am a ways from what I would call a custom painter who would have any Porsche experience. If was to work with the local guy who does good utilitarian work do any of you have any advice on replicating the original paint work? Should we order a Porsche specified paint? What would mirror the rest of the car, a base with how many coats of clear? Looking for some advice so I maximize working with the local shop. Thanks.

porsche paints all there cars using glasurit . there is no need to go to porsche and spend more money for a can of paint with a porsche label on it .
your car of it is the 027 color used from 1973 to 1987 is not cleared it is a single stage color . the color 84A used from 1994 to date is a clear coated color . they are both called guards red . there is also LM3A guards red used on the porsches that were built in the audi plant they are also a non cleared color up untill 1990 them they were clear coated after that . you should know that because the 911's are a hand built car there is a good bet your new lid will not fit with perfect gaps . it may but 90 % of the time they don't . it is in no way custom painting what your looking for . you would just need a good painter that knows how to spray a standered OE color . custom painting is a hole other ball game . another good reason you should pick the glasurit line of paint is that they have what is called color max chips . they are real spray out or the real color codes this will cut down on getting the wrong shade of color for your car and save the shop from having to do the spray out them selfs . as for matching the OE finish that is all up to the painter you pick to do the work . there are sprayers and then there are painter . the sad thing is many sprayers today think they are painters . a painter can tint colors and copy the finish of any car out there . sprayers get lost with tinting colors and can't match the OE finishes on cars also most have to buff every part of a panel to get the finish to look good . porsches only got spot sanded if a piece of dust landed in the paint . yes they have a flat finish with very little orange peal to them but they do have some . over time with people buffing there cars it also does take more of the peal off the cars finish but in no way are they flat like glass . |

83 Targa

Good question... I need to refinish my deck lid only and want to make sure I get that true match. Did you unload your original deck lid? I have a guards red targa as well and I am staying with the classic look.
