rattle can durability
doing a tin restore during a motor rebuilt and can't quite afford to powdercoat having more time that money.. ive blasted all the parts and will be painting them. have done the cylinder tin in a prime & flat black spray with ceramic high temp paint with the suggested oven curing.
i will be moving to the perimeter engine tin that will not require the high temp paint as i touched up the tin previous, with a rattle enamel experiencing no heat related issues. my question is what might be the more durable finish to resist scratches & scrapes, the high temp ceramic paint, or a high quality enamel spray paint? is there a preferred clearcoat application i might consider using to help with durability? there are high temp clear coats that do not take a specific heat cycle cure so i wonder if the ceramic properties, bad or good are lost? tia, t |

you should know that you don't need a heat paint on the motor at all . auto paints will not bake off untill the heat gets over 450 f degrees . if your motor ever gets that hot you will have more problems than just your paint .
the big reason why most people think they need heat paint for there motor parts is because spray paint in paint can form is just low grade paint . any quality auto paint that you use a hardener with will hold up . on porsche tin we use sem flat black rust shield mixed with there hardener it wil give you the same gloss as the tin with the OE finish and will hole up longer that the OE finish . the reason why it will hold up better is that it's a chromated product to combat any rust from starting . as for wanting to clear the tin that will not make it more durable . that comes from hardener in a 2K system and or from the substraight your coating . if your not using a 2k system you will not have any durablity to the coatings you put on . the OE tin is not powder or ceramic coated but it's E-coated with a product almost like the sem rust-shield products . this is why when you strip it down to bare metal you do not find a under coating product on the tin . |
