Oxidation Returns Overnight?
Question for the pros here.
I'm working on fixing the paint on a friends 76 Polar Silver 911. It appears the car is heavily oxidated. At first I thought the car had cracked paint but the cracks now appear to be heavy deep scratches. I wanted to run my process by the group here and see if what I'm doing makes sense? I've had experience detailing cars with my Porter Cable but have never wet sanded a car before. 1) Soft block, Wet Sand using 1,500 2) Meguairs 100 Compound 3) Meguairs Polish 4) Meguairs Yellow Wax After running through these steps the paint looks night and day better...at first. The problem is we woke up today to find that the white oxidation has returned over night?? What the heck am I doing wrong? Hard to take pictures of the paint but this one shows wet sanding on the left vs. the undone right side. ![]() and one of the car for good measure ![]() ![]() |

if it's what i think with out seeing the car up close is the finish is called checking . the scratchs you talked about are a very common with colors like silvers and if it is checking clear you could buff the finish until the cows come home and the finish will keep dyeing back .
there is no saving a dead finish some times you just have to strip the clear off the panels that are cheacked and refinish them . now that if it is what i think it is ? but i'm sure it looked like some one took steel wool to the finish before you coklor sanded it ? if its not and the finish is really not checked . if your trying to compound the cars finish with a DA type buffer for get it ! they will not bring back the shin you would need a regular type of buffer if you color sanded the finish . if your using the meguairs compound it's a oil based product and gives a false shin when buffing a panel that was color sanded . you woul;d want to pick a water based compound some like presta's cutting cream . it's i have stated many times before on here and the down sides to using oil based products . all they do is mask the true finish of what your looking for and the next day you end up with the finish looking like you did nothing at all . look at it this way take some oil and wipe it on the cars panel it will look noce and shinny thats untill you wash the car or give it some time then it will look the same before you wiped the oil on it . oil based detail products do the same thing . |

Get rid f the meguairs " snake oil polish and buy the 3m
3 stage perfect it system with the matching pads. You will need a High speed polisher , if you don't want to buy the big dollar polisher that's fine Hf has a high speed variable fr less than $50. The 3m is a bit pricey but it is 3m and it will last the normal garage guy A few years. Also if you are not a master grade polisher move from 1500 then 2000 before polishing much Better. When your finished use 3m hand glaze. It's called hand glaze for a reason. It's not called orbital polisher glaze. Rub that on in small areas until it is gone. You should also buy a tub of lusso oro wax you will find it online. Will last you years It's like 40$. There is simply no better wax on the market better for less than $200. If this does not settle your issue , the car needs to be stripped and sprayed I'm looking at the pic and it doesn't seem to be checker. |
