Question factory undercoat question (pictures included)

I have done some custom sheet metal on my project car as well as some panel repair and I would like to undercoat and seam seal.

What can i use to recoat the sheet metal so that I looks close to factory?

I have some of the SEM 40977 but the coverage is limited and I am not happy with the way it lays out.

Thanks in advance for your time

Brendon

Wurth makes the correct stuff.

1st wurth makes nothing that porsche would use on there cars when they are built .
wurth is not a maker of there own products they are just distributors and put there name on other peoples products .

the SEM sprayable seam sealer you have is not used on porsches . sem has a gun to spray that product you will see that type of seam sealer on VW's / audi's along with cars like mazda 's .

SEM has a very good two part seam sealer you will need the SEM gun for it but the part number is 39377 seam sealer .
SEM also has a single part seam sealer that works good # 29372 all you need for that seam sealer is a run of the mill caulk gun .

what you want is a chip guard not undercoating .
we use the U-POL chip guard in my shops we have found it is a good match looks wise to the old porsche's 3M's beige . we also use it on the fuel tanks to match the color because it is tintable .
we also use the SEM pro-tex chip guard it's a top quality product that uses a catalyst (hardener) it does not have the same look as the old porsche chip guards but it's a beter product because of the catalyst .

when it comes to coating the floor we use SEM rust-shield . if you want it to be semi gloss black like the OE porsche pans are you use the flat black and add the sem rust-shield hardener to it mixxed 8 part to 1 part . it will be a dead nuts match to the coating porsche uses on there floor pans .

because it looks like your going to track the car i would not chip guard the floor pans . only the rockers i would chip guard . the reason is it's just weight that is not needed not that it adds much but non the less it's still added weight .
on the cars we build we remove all the chip guard and not add it . most of the time on a porsche it's about 11 LBS of chip guard on the cars .
the cars we build we look at removing grams not just LBS it's worth it in the long run .

Although I agree that less weight is a better thing. I want to have "some" amount of noise reduction as this is going to be a dual use car. I have stripped the factory sound deadening material off the interior side of the floor pans.

I chose the SEM 40977
SEM 40977 Sound and Seal Sprayable Coating - SEM Adhesives

because of the 2 part. I borrowed a SEM 70039 gun and spray applicator tip from a friends body shop,
SEM 70039 Pneumatic Applicator Gun - SEM Adhesives
but I am not happy with the coverage and it took forever to get it to spray out. (not sure if I have the wrong settings on the gun)

It took 2 tubes to cover the front duct for the oil cooler area. I am basically looking for something that I can use to seam seal the rear firewall and get a good coat of sound deadening. If I were to keep using the SEM 40977, it will cost me $350 in material!!

Again, this is going to be a street car with track events. I have shaved enough weight on other parts of the build, just want to get rid of a little bit of the "tin can" sound of a true race car.

Thanks for the input.

Brendon

I am sorry if I offered the wrong information. I have been using Wurth products for 25 years now and see it in many shops.

I was just offering information for a product that is available and not hard to obtain.

there is nothing wrong with wurth but you can buy the same products for less of you know were to look .
u-pol makes the chip guard for wurth .

if you don't care about weight then go with the chip guard . the person at the body shop should have told you about the SEM you were thinking of useing . it's a seam sealer not really a chip guard . SEM has 3 tips you could use to spray the product you could have just used the wrong one but the coverage area for that product is not that big . it's made for trunk areas to spray around the seams .

go with the sem two part chip guard . pro-tex # 39824 and there catalyst # 4067? you can top coat it with the rust-shield if you want toor any other top coat you want . you can also tint it if you would like .
we tend to use rust-shield for the insides of the race cars we build . the reason is you can get it in 100's of colors you can spray it over preped bare metal or primers and top coats .
we tend to go for light colors like very light grays when it's left up to us to pick the color . the reason it light colors you can see the gauges , switches and crap like that . also light colors are cooler on hot days than say black would be . gray , black and white go with any color of the out side of the car will be .

Sort of the reason I went with the product in the first place was to seam seal around the panels...

Heading to the body shop supply house now, What would I spray with a 1.5 - 1.8 primer tip on my gun?

Thanks again for the feedback.

the shst-shield will spray fine with the tips you have in your gun .
for the chip-guard you will need a gun for that but they are very low cost at places like harbor freight .

there are many different ways to go about what you want to do it depends on what your looking for as a finished product .

going with 40820 chip guard kit. It comes with a quart of 40824 chip guard and 2.5 pints of catalyst.

Thanks again

I have a old primer gun I can sacrifice for this.

you will not get chip guard out of a primer gun if that's what your thinking ?
you will need a gun for chip guard .

According to the spec sheet it needs a 1.8 - 2.2 tip. I'll have to see what I have.

I will have to see what I have for a tip in my primer gun.

Again, thanks for the input. I'll post up some pics of the progress.

Real work tomorrow, so no shop time for a few days.

we use a chip guard gun that starts at a 2.5 and can be ajusted out to a 3.5 . it works great with that . i would like to see it with just a primer gun being used i think i will mix up a little tomorrow and do a test panel to see how it looks with a 1.8 tip .

Eh, don't wast the material. wait till this weekend and I will post p some pics (or most up my failure)....

I am up to my elbows in body filler today. I think i applied and took off about 1/2 a gallon to get these "ready to paint" FG bumpers prepped as well as get my oil cooler ducts roughed in.

Sorry for the crappy iPhone pics...

so just for the fun of it i mixxed up a little and sprayed it out of a primer gun with a 1.9 tip .
it was kind of smooth were out of a chip guard gun it's a heavy texture .
spraying it out of a primer gun is a good match to what they use on the 1st and 2nd gen mazda miata's from the body line down were the 2.5 to 3.5 has the look more like bed liner material .

IMR-Merlin,
I have access to a chip guard gun here in southern NH. The gun plugs into the top of a "spray bomb" style can.

I am looking for the texture, so I wil have to source a 2.5+ tip gun...

I have HVLP guns, but nothing with a big enough tip. I am in Manch, where in Nahsua are you? I might just suck it up and check the harbor freight in Amherst.
