Repairing rust holes on the hood around bode

I have some rust holes around the badge on the hood. Body man told me that if you cut out the rust and repair it would warp the hood. If you just fill it, the filler will not stay with all of the vibration the hood undergoes. Help - do I try and find a different hood without rust??

He is right but there is a solution. Use lead filler (yes the kind you apply with a torch) and it will not be an issue. You may have a problem finding a craftsman who knows how to use lead....

Using lead filler is not as hard as it sounds. It is easiest on a flat level surface like a hood. Eastwood sells the material as well as an informative video. There are potential toxicity issues with using lead, though, so one must be careful.

you do not in any way want to use lead filler on your hood to fill rust holes .
you will do more damage than just welding .
the things you have to think about is the heat from the torch ! you will need to heat the panel enough to melt the lead into the holes .
then that is not what lead products are made to do . lead is just a old filler material .

there are a couple of ways to go about filling the little rot holes in a hood or other panels like that .
if the holes are just small little ones you can just weld the hole one little tack weld at a time letting the weld cool between tack welds .

if you have to cut out a area and do a patch that is not the end of the world either .
again you just have to let the panel cool to the tought after every tack weld .

you could also use a product like a two part panel bolding adhesive for metal panels and just put a little dab over the rot hole . for the bonding adhesive you will want to put a very little dimple were the hole is for the metal bond to set into .

if your body man does not know how or what to do for repairs like that you really should find another person to do the repairs on your car .

Speaking as a guy who does his own lead work, I would not agree with your statement, the heat from lead work does not cause any material warping as the level of heat is well below the level at which there are issues. I have roof panels and hood work a number of years ago, no issues whatsoever.

I agree that lead is not good for filling perforations, those must be replaced with solid metal, but lead is an ideal material for body work due to its adhesion, similar rate of expansion under heat (e.g. sunlight) and flexibility. The issue is finding someone who can do it, which is why I learned to do it myself.

i too work with body solders all the time and you can very easily warp a thin panel like a hood or center of a roof with the 625 F or better degrees heat that is needed to bring the body solder to it's melting point .
now if it's a person that knows just what they are doing they would most likely not warp any thing when doing body solder work . but the same can be said if you needed to cut a area out and weld in a patch panel ( that if you know what your doing you will not warp any thing ).

that was going to be my suggestion..

Hoods are everywhere.

I filled in my badge holes and I took the route 962 suggested. little tacks with the welder on low heat.

Tack, grind, tack, grind. Used a little filler on the hood to take a minor blemish ouf, but not in badge area.
