944 Floor Pan Gauge

It's time to get welding!

I want to patch up the small soft spots in my floorboard before winter falls (should be a couple of days away now for us Michiganders ), and do some other rust reparations.

So what thickness of steel should I get if I'm grinding out and replacing a couple of small places on the floorboard? Should I specifically get galvanized, or will it matter since a lot of the Zinc is going to be ground off prior to welding? (And, since I'm painting/undercoating it anyway.) And lastly, should I just get one big sheet to cut up and use the same gauge for my battery tray? (That's rusted out pretty bad - I'd like to cover the entire bottom of it.)

20 gage is what vw/audi uses on most every thing but rockers and alike .
so you could use it for the battery try also .
no it does not have to be galvanized you should how ever use a etch or epoxy primer on the bare metal .

because of were the 944 battery is you should maybe get a battery acid neutrelizing mat for under the battery . there cheap at like 5 US dollars but do stop acid from eating the area around the battery and then leak water into the car when it rains or snows .
i tend to use them in all my cars because even if the battery does not have a acid problem batterys still tend to move around a little and it will also stop it from wearing off the paint under it .

Now let's suppose that in the process of grinding rust off, I found a small section of frame rail that's just started to rust. I assume I'd need to use a thicker gauge for that; any idea what gauge?

you would be looking for 16 gage for the rails .
