Best Type of paint for the S.W/ Arizona
I will be painting my car I hope by Nov,..what would be the best system for the South West,..its hot and dry most of the time,...But my concern is the flying,.rock bits they chip seal the roads here liquid tar and gravel,..steam rolled,..and of course car's and trucks throw that stuff ( they kinda stopped doing it). But, which paint can handle chips better,..single stage,..which is easy for me to use,...or base coat and clear,..Thanks Frank

all paint will take chips the same .
making paint more chip resistance or I should say the most it can be starts from your under coats and your prep work . if your spraying in your garage it's best to go with a base clear system . the reason is there are less wet coats open to the air to get dust in . when spraying a single stage you will have 3 to 4 coats of wet paint open the hole time were if you get dust in it there is nothing you can do about it . base clear will only have 2 open wet coats of clear the base color if you get dust in it you can stop and wet sand the dust out the spray a little more color were you sanded the dust out . they have clear film you can put on the car in the areas were it's more prone to chiping in order to help protect the finish after the car is painted . there are two types offered vinyl or spray I have used the 3M spray paint defender many times and like it allot . it's very ez to use and if you want to remove it the spray film peals off much easier with no adhesive to deal with . |

other then getting into the quality of resins and pigments used all paints will last about the same base clear and single stage .
colors like solid red that are more UV sensitive then say a white color . so clear coating them does help some for the longevity of reds ,yellows and oranges . the colors will still brake down under the clear coat over time and not much more time then it does with it being just a single stage . as for longevity it goes like this enamels will not last as long as a urethane . the lowest grade is a Alkyd enamel then moving up the chain to acrylic enamel then urethane enamels then to full urethanes . if you take care of the finish by keeping it clean a SS will last as long as a BC finish with solid colors this does not hold true with a metallic color metallic need a clear to have them last as the metallic flakes raze to the top as you spray them and over a short time the metallic will wear . |
