Can you mail order the correct paint?
I have a 1988 930, black... Local car paint place says they can match the paint with their scanner, in Dupont.
Did porsche have many shades of black in 1988??? Or just one code? Is there a way to find that code, and order the exact correct color? Being in Wisconsin, I don't have a lot of paint options in the area. The last time I had the white on my car "matched" it was close, but not very. Good enough for blending, lousy for touch up or spot blends. I thought that most paint places could look up the exact color code for their computers... Any help appreciated. Bo |

the colors cameras are kind of worthless ! they at best are 80% accurate most are really only about 70% .
the code is on the drivers door A-pillar look for 041 or 700 they are the two blacks used in 1988. there are two codes for black 3 if you add in the water cooled cars . 041 is used from 1971 to date with two variants . 700 was used from 1972 to 1996 also with two variants of the color . this does not mean your dusnot jobber will have all the variants (they are not called shades). a jobber(auto paint store) can not look up color codes you have to give them the code off the car then they can mix what you need for color . |

Thank you for replying, I really appreciate it...
I was under the impresion that the paint store needed "more" than the 3 color code? The paints back in 1988 were single stage? Will the dupont be accurate color wise, as I don't know anyplace that carries glassurit. Would I be better off ordering a quart of the correct glassurit single stage? I plan to repaint the front bumper, due to rock chips. It would be nice if it matched as the rest of the paint is reasonable. Thank you for your help - your guidance is much appreciated. Bo |

the paint store (jobber) only needs the one color code off the car .
it would be one of the two I posted . look on the door jam where the hinges are . yes the cars then were in single stage . |

![]() ok let my try and explain how glasurit color matching works and why 1st you would need to go to a galsurit jobber . this is a sample of 3 variants for a BMW color I'm painting . I went to the car and got the color code off it . I then went over to my computer with the BASF color look up on it and put in the info for the car year , make , color code . it gave me 3 variants for the color with each one being a little different shades. I then go to the car and in the sun match the best looking chip to the car then pull the car in the shade out of the sun and check the chips again . on the back of the chip it tells me the variant I need to mix . the chips are real paint sprayed by real people at BASF . there are many 1000's of chips in a big cabinet . so to match the color of the car you 1st need the basf glasurit chips and the car all in the same place so you can hold the chips up to the car . the down side is DUSNOT has nothing like this for color matching they may not even have any variants for the color on your car like basf does . what you have to do is get the code off the car the jobber can not do a thing for you if you just give them the 2 codes I posted because only one of them goes to your car . |
