You have to at the very least separate the fenders from the body near the doors to remove the old fender to cowl beading and replace it with new. Also, if you're reasonably certain that the inner surfaces of your fenders are rust-free then you should be OK, otherwise you're taking the risk of ruining a new paint job with hidden rust. Fenders have quite a few nooks and crannies that hold dirt and moisture; I just repainted my 911 and after inspection we decided to pull the fenders completely to clean, strip, and seal the inner surfaces...

If the 911 is a stripped tub to bare metal with fenders on, I'm curious how much labor time it would take to take the front fenders off and put them back on with good gaps.
I'm having that discussion with my painter right now and changing color, so I would like to have the inner fender painted as well. I believe there are just a series of bolts/nuts on each side that need to be removed, so probably 30 minutes top to take them off and do you think a couple extra hours to install plus a couple extra hours to paint and hang the fenders separately? |

Is it proper to use that "terra tape" stuff along the seams when mounting fenders to the car (specifically along the top and at fender cowl flange.? Thanks

as for pulling the fenders off to paint . yes you should do so this way you get new under and top coats between the fender and cowl areas you will also get a cleaner job by doing so .
as for taping the edges of the panels when mounting the panels back on the car . if you think your going to bang one into the other then do so . how ever you will have to remove the tape to get a proper gap between panels . |

Thanks, did the factory use the tape (or some kind of sealant) between the fender and cowl/tub flange.? Do most of the modern day restos just paint the flanges and bolt them up with no sealer/tape.? Any insight from restorers.? Thanks

there is a product (strip caulk) that is used down the length of the apron (that's the area where the hood opens and the fender bolts are ) . the cowl at fender gets a gasket/weather seal .
strip caulk is low tack (not to sticky) window seal /caulk is a high tack (very sticky) you do not want to use windshield caulk . the low tack strip caulk stops water from getting thru the body clips and fender bolts holes into the trunk area. |

you could use the 3M strip caulk but it's black .
we use this grey color caulk to match what Porsche uses . it's made by frost king I don't know the part number . it comes on like a 75 or 100 ft roll it's a product I know when I see the package . I want to say it's in a blue colored box at the home stores . |
