Nothing says you have to remove the glass, how good of a paint job do you expect? You will want to if you want a real good paint job. I'll be redoing a turbo soon because of a poor quality paint job. |

find some string twine rope that will fit under the window gaskets to lift them off the body .
then you can mask the window gasket off with the gasket lifted away from the body . doing so will let the primers sealers and paint get under the gaskets so you will not get a paint edge or tape line around the gasket . wurth also makes lifting tapes in different sizes to do the same thing . personally I don't like wurth products and use the twine more but there lifting tape does work ok . so no you do not have to remove the glass to get a clean job when it comes to masking around window seals . |

Often there is hidden rust especially in the front windshield area, I would take all the glass out its really not that difficult or exspensive.

when you say out in 5 minutes we all know it's not the truth !
how ever they do come out kind of quickly . the book time to R and I glass is front windshield is 3.5 with antenna 3.0 with out . QTR glass book tie is 1.5 per side . targa rear glass is 6.5 book . rear coupe book time is 3.2 there are many good reasons to remove glass when your refinishing a car but the same can be said for just leaving the glass in . I just painted my friends 911 over the weekend . we left the glass in and roped it . no tape lines the sealer and paint went under the gaskets and when we pulled the rope out the rubber laid back leaving us with a nice clean look around the gaskets . the owner uses the car for track days and some street use . it's a rust free car with just a hand full of dings and dents on it . my friend and I did the hole car start to finish in 3 days . we used low grade products to keep the cost around 700 dollars . when it comes to refinishing a car you have to do what it calls for in what your going to do with the car . in a case like my buddies car when if ever it rusts under the windshield gasket we all pull the glass then sandblast it and spot in the area . saying you have to pull the glass out is like the guy going a concourse job saying you have to remove every thing from the car to a bare shell . so simply not all jobs call for the same thing ! |

![]() What paint line did you use that came to $700? That sounds awefully reasonable for materials... |

we used Limco single stage .about 400 dollars plus the hardener was 60 dollars
we also used the limco primer and it can also be used as a tinted sealer . 140 dollars uses the same hardener as the SS does. we used 2 rolls of 1.5 " masking tape one roll or 3/4 mask tape about a 1/3 of a roll of low cost masking paper . we got 3 boxes of USC orion DA paper 220 , 180 and 80 grits about 20 bucks a box . we used about a half Gal. of body filler 40 dollars for the gal. once you add in the other products like pre paint cleaner wipe down rags tack rags and such the total materials bill was about 700 bucks. the job came out dam hear dust free and laid down like glass so nothing to even spot buff . started it on Thursday night worked until 1 AM removed the parts we needed to and did 90% of the body work. came back Friday and finished the body work and got it into primer baked it in the booth for 30 minutes . pulled it out and sanded it down with the DA and 220 . blow it off and back in the booth masked it up and painted it finished around midnight . came in saturday and put the car back together . the next day he drove the car to his moms for easter dinner . it looks like a 10K job for next to nothing if he bangs it up at the track no big deal . Pretty cool
![]() Just curious, why not offer the same service to other porsche guys. You always see mention that a paint job runs about $10,000 or so. I bet a lot of folks would be thrilled with a "pretty good" paint job, with cheaper paint, for 1/2 that price... |

sadly I tried it when I 1st opened my shop .
that ended before the 1st year I was opened . we would do a job like this on average for 5 to 6K . the cars would come in and I would put two guys on the job and knock it out in 3 to 4 days . we did 12 jobs like that but what happened with all but two owners is they still picked the cars apart like they were 30K jobs . l had one owner take me to court because the car was hit at one time and the hood did not line up with the fenders all that great . he and I knew this from the start and like with every job he signed a contract that even started it in the contract we would not pull the car (as it needed to be) but we would see what we could do about getting the hood to line up as best as we could . needless to say I won the case as it was in the contract . the owners even though it was clear as day in the contracts would ***** about dumb things like you did not replace the old cracked gasket under the hood badge . in the contracts it stated pricing with no one parts . it was we take the needed things off the car and put them back on the car . it was a repaint not in any way a resto or repair . in the race shop we still do low cost repaints but they are only for race cars . the car owners shot them selfs in the foot by trying to get more then what the contract stated they will . so when you want the glass out and new molding it's no longer a quick in and out job . we also used to do just paint jobs for people that would do there own body work . this to stopped after a very short time . we would get crap work we would have to go over and if some thing was not right because of there work we would get the blame . about 6 years ago this guy came back after 12 years with his 930 that all we did was paint it and he wanted us to repaint the car for him for free . I looked up the work order and we did the car 12 years ago . you could see 36 grit sand scratches all over the car . again all we did was sand the primer he sprayed sealed the car and painted it . we did not do any body work . priming , remove or install any parts no color sanding or buffing . just painted it ! that owner did not even have his copy of the work order he signed and was his. so now all we will do is high end cars and only top end restos . |
