Welding and metal work wisdom

Metal work and welding are a huge part of keeping the cars we love in working order. From replacing rusted steel to fabricating race bits. While there are some fantastic threads on restoring cars, there isn't a thread dedicated to welding and metal work.

I barely know the basics, but would love to learn from the grey beards out there. Can be simple tricks or hard-learned skills.

I'll start with the most obvious:

Make the patch before you cut out the rust.

I, for one, would find your Miata patch tutorial very interesting. I hope you are inclined to post it.

I second Drbraunsr statement. Anything you contribute is always very useful.

Practice, practice ........... practice.
You don't have to use the entire replacement piece you might purchase from RD.
Always cut back to where you get good solid metal. You'll learn that over time.
For the most part use short bursts on the trigger. Blip, blip, blip.

And follow whatever 962porsche teaches us ..............

Takes practice, but some simple tools and experimentation will teach a great deal. Try making some flat patches and work from there. Can always cut them out and try again.
