Price check - rust repair
 

My car has three small rust spots (small to my eye). They includes a spot under the left rear back seat, under the petal cluster and the fuel pump bracket. All the spots are about an inch or two (at most) visable. While no rust is visible it probably exists under the right rear seat.

I got a quote of $4k to replace the two rear seat bottoms (just the flat bottoms) and the other two areas. To me, this seems like a lot of money to cut, weld and undercoat. Should I proceed or look for alternatives?

Food for thought:

Check Sierra Madre Collection or Restoration design for back seat replacements. The cost of sheet metal is 300.00 per side for rear seats. The replacement parts are sold larger than you need. Then the parts need to be cut to fit. If you patch with sheet metal fabricated by the repair person your paying for time. The paint and undercoating should be replaced on the underside of the seat bottoms and the area the undercoating was removed to avoid catching on fire from the welder.

I just did a set replacement on a SWB car it was and education in interdependency.

A lot of this cost will depend upon how much work you do yourself. In essence, will you or the shop be doing the disassembly/re-assembly for the repair? Further, there will be a little more to it than simply cut, trim, weld, undercoat.. then here's your car. The process is a bit more involved for a proper repair that lasts.

Biggest part of the cost is probably stripping the car and then putting it back together. Much like a spray job. Ask for a cost breakdown of the quote and then see if buying the RD panels is cost effective.

The rust under the petal cluster. How is this repaired to match the rest of the underside?
