Painting 84 Carrera Rocker Molding/Trim

I have an 84 Carrera that is Ruby Red Metallica. Some time in the past the PO improperly jacked up the car on both sides and boogered up the moldings. I removed the moldings and got to work with the dolly and got the metal to look very good. However, in doing the body work, I chipped the paint in multiple areas. Since this molding has the stone guard on it and it is for the most part underneath he car, I was thinking I could repaint it with rattle can of he proper l810 paint. Should I even attempt this or just have the body shop shoot this? If I can do this and have it look nearly factory, what would be the proper steps? I am assuming:

1. Scuff up with scotch brute or something similar
2. Spray with one coat of primer
3. Spray with several coate of color coat ....how many?
4. Spray with claer coat......how many?

Any sanding in between or is this not necessary because this is over stone guard? Or is this best left to a pro? Any suggestions or comments appreciated as you can tell I am a paint newly.
