1976 930 turbo paint job

I'm restoring 76 930 turbo. My first Porsche and my first restoration.
I found great paint shop and they do amazing work,my problem is that I don't know anything about painting the cars.Whatever he told me make a sense to me,but I would like to know what is the most important that I have to pay attention on,what should I ask him or tell him.Im painting whole car from scratch.
Can you guys give me some tips or ideas what to ask and what to pay attention to
Thanks

Hello sleepersd:

How did you find the shop? Is it one which regularly or exclusively does high-end cars? Did it come recommended by a fellow Porsche owner who has used the shop? Did you tour the shop and look at their facility? Is it clean? Do they have a nice paint booth? Did you see cars in progress? Did you inspect a car they had just done a complete paint job on?

Painting is an art and there are a lot of "hack" shops out there who do collision repair and not much else. Collision repair and restoration work/paint are two different things. A paint job can make or break a restoration. I would suggest asking for recommendations here and narrowing the area by possibly using a zip code range to help members make suggestions.

Also, educate yourself regarding painting by reading a lot of the build threads and seeing how they handle complete paint jobs. You don't need to be an expert to recognize expert work once you have seen it before. Good luck and Cheers. Michael

What did the shop tell you? How much are they charging you? What kind of paint are they using? Are they dismantling the car (removing doors, windshield, et) Your car is a special one and should be properly restored. I wouldn't go shopping for bargains or take it to a shop that doesn't specialize in Porsche. If a shop tells you $5000 take your car and get out of there. How about some pics of your car.

Shop was recommended by my mechanic who is working on my car.
They do only high-end cars and they are also certified to paint Bentley, McLaren's, Lamborghini …
I was also at the shop ,it is a huge shop and he had all super cars inside with one Porsche in the booth . Also I know that every year he is working on some new car for SEMA car show.
He also explained everything to me what and how he'll do it,my only problem is that I don't know ANYTHING about painting a card.
What he should use for under the car,is there any special thing or product that was use on 1976 930,what to use on door trims around the windows.....
I'm located in Chicago zip 60657

Yes he told me what paint he'll use it but I don't remember exactly what he told me.yes they will remove all the parts of the car.Price is $25k and they are professional ,specialized in high end car and certified for Bentley, McLaren , Lamborghini......
They are just not specialized in restoring the Porsche but they did a lot of them .
He had this year one of the Porsche's that he did on SEMA car show

1976 930 turbo pain

Beautiful job. В Like the thinВ lines between the colors. В Very nice detail. В You mean 96....not 86. В Right? В В Did you you paint or powdercoat the wheels?

Just had my 76 painted. Although the shop that painted my car has done many many 911 paint jobs there are a few things I wish I was more specific on. Be sure they line up and block the whole car assembled so everything is laser straight before paint, my painter did this as most high end shops would. Paint the trunk hinges on the car attached, we painted mine off the car and had to touch up the bolts and re-allign the deck lid so there were some marks on the hinges. Paint the door hinges on the car attached. If the doors are lined up properly before paint leave the hinges and then just pin the doors and make minor adjustments. Good luck - cool project.
