How would I do this?

I am trying to put a translucent design onto my metallic paint that is floral and fades something like in the following photos. My current finish is 1988 911 factory paint Metallic Granite Green (a dark greenish grey). Any idea how to achieve this? Stencil? another method? Free hand with a paint pen?

thank you in advance.

Not trying to be a smartass but I doubt many porsche guys are into that style paint jobs. Try looking into the low rider forums. That's more of that style and I'm sure there are very talented painters that can replicate what you're looking for. It can also be airbrushed on the existing paint. It's cool and you'll have something differant.

No offense taken....but why is that a "low rider" style? I thought a lot of Porsche owners are into modifying their car? I do appreciate your tip.

I guess what I am really trying to find out is whether I can add this on top of my existing paint as a vinyl appliqué (decal?) or paint directly onto of my current 1988 metallic paint?
thanks

I think what Sebscst was trying to say is look at guys who are more into freestyle or custom painting. There is a whole world of difference between techniques used in painting custom/low riders and Porsche'. A good painter in the Porsche community may not be aware of all the tricks used in custom painting.

it's really very easy to airbrush what your seeing .
you buy lace in a pattern you like . you then spray the back side with a very light coat of photo matting adhesive ( very light coat ) just to have it stick and stay in place . then you lay it over the area/s you are looking to have the graphics . then you do your airbrushing and shading with the lace laying there .
i have done things like this countless times ( only once with lace on a girls crash helmet ) but for doing a carbon fiber look it's very common way to do it .
at some point i will post some photos of the way it's done . when you see it you will be shocked just how easy it is to do .

what your showing are two different types of effects .
the small pitcher is not airbrushed the porsche is a airbrushing .
doing this to a dark color car is hard to do as the shading has to be darker the the pattern . so if you were to do it over a dark color car you have to do a reverse airbrushing .
i also have a big ass vinyl cutter and you could do it in reverse using vinyl and airbrush in the flowers lighter .
so i would scan the pattern then use the cutter and then do a reverse airbrushing for a dark colored car .

Thank you 962....I was hoping you would answer this query. The car is a granite green metallic. What I want is somewhere between the two photos> I have a vision of almost translucent flowers landing on the car fading out to nothing by the time that the bottom and back of the car are reached. Like the car drove into an almost invisible flower patch and then this is what remained. All tone on tone. A very subtle thing - like the non red part of the bigger photo.

What type of prep would I do on the existing paint?
air brush vs vinyl? The existing paint is decent but not great. Some road rash, minimal orange peel, about 60 percent original to the car (1988). Recently clay bar 'd and waxed and all chips touched up by a beginner (me).
I would be so appreciative if you could share pictures. I am a girly girl at heart and want my 911 to reflect me.

i wouldn't do it in a vinyl .
as for being ok to do i have nothing against it at all . in simple fact i think it would be pretty dam cool .
you could do the mindless and copy the why over done gulf or martini crap !
you would need to wet sand the car with 800 to 600 grit paper .
get a big ass roll of lace cloth , photo mount spray , and then lay the cloth nice and flat over the car were you want the graphics . i would go with a dark grays for the shading using the airbrush and small touch up guns . you then remove the lace cloth and clear the panels were the graphics are .

i'm racing this weekend so you will have to wait until next week and i will post a little how to on it to give you a better idea . sadly i don't have lace but i will show it with another type cloth but the way it's done is still the same .

Mr. 962porsche, if you ever get a chance to post a "how to" on this I would be very appreciative.

Love the direction you are going with the carpet will look sharp with exterior color and a surprise to the interior.

my .02- don't over due it- I would put carpet in first then evaluate what to do with interior pieces. The graphics if done correctly can be a nice subtle personal touch. I have seen this done on cars where depending on the light, pattern can be prominent or muted. You may want to consider also doing on your airbox.

Don't listen to the haters -

Thanks - yes that effect is exactly what I am looking for. I am waiting for the carpet to be installed prior to modding the interior any more. The fabric panels look wonderful, and the leather dash trim piece is almost complete. what do you mean about the air box?

You can do an entire vinyl wrap in any color you want and your design can be printed onto the vinyl or you can sand your existing clearcoat with 1000 grit lay down your lace and lightly airbrush with sepia or what I would use to do is mix your factory formula and then just darken it up a bit by adding more black and then use that as my shading tone. That way everything jives super well. The more drastic you want it the more black you can add. That will give you the effect like the photo you posted. If you you use pearls or something to highlight then it will be sort of the reverse negative of the effect as the pearls will highlight the edges versus shade them. A clearcoat would then be applied over all of the airbrushing to seal it all up

By the way you can even do a vinyl wrap and then airbrush on top of that

I like that idea...of mixing the factory color just a little darker and then spraying thru a stencil cut out of vinyl....what type of place would be able to cut the design out?

Any sticker shop or vinyl wrapping shop can do it. Have them do it it out of a low tack masking vinyl as it will make life a lot easier. You actually slightly misunderstood me regarding airbrushing on top of the vinyl but I came back here to suggest having your graphics made as a vinyl stencil. What I originally meant was youbcan have your entire car vinyl wrapped in anything from clear vinyl to bright red and then you can do your floral graphics on top of that. In three years if you no longer like it you can peel it all off

Is there any chance you could sell that car to me and find a better canvas?
