Great milestone John, congrats, it looks great.

Regarding the trimming; I've got mine in currently with Steve at F&H trimmers Coorparoo who was recommended by Classic British & German for the silverknit carpet install. I'll let you know when its back if you want to have a look at the job.

Cheers Al

Don't worry - fundage is an issue for me too! I still think there's another 200 hours of work to do...

I expect to get my new carpets and fabrics soon. So today I cracked out the contact adhesive, sharp scissors and knives, and the heat gun for some upholstering.

I did this job once before around 10 years ago. But this time it's with the correct German vinyls that match my dash This isn't an overly difficult job, but you need good table space and sharp scissors. I also prefer the Fuller brand adhesive - they make a terrific 'gel' consistency heat resistant adhesive that doesn't run. I sometimes heat the vinyl a little where I need to stretch it around odd curves. The vinyl stretches better in one direction than the other, so you need to plan the orientation to get the best coverage and stretch where it's needed.

One of the the little custom touches I was keen to complete is the ashtray delete. The '69 and later cars have the ashtray incorporated into the knee pad... I used a '68 one-piece knee pad for a clean look.

Back parcel shelf is plastic coreflute (sign plastic). It's impervious to moisture and is the correct 3mm thickness. I thought about using it for the door panels, but have gone with 3mm ply which will be sealed with outdoor varnish before being upholstered, and I'll still add the plastic membrane to be sure. Oh, I'm also using Dynamat Extreme over the rear firewall. It's also under the headliner and I'll be using it on the side panels, rear seats and on the floors. Not over everything, but just on larger surfaces that tend to "drum".

I'm wondering if this still the place for my thread... the bodywork and painting is complete and now I'm off onto upholstering

Another gratuitous shot - I'm happy that (on my monitor at least) this is accurately representing the Ossi Blau paint

John,

Looking gorgeous. I hated the upholstery work probably most of all. Good to hear you have an adhesive you're happy with. I can't say the same. It was a struggle that may need to be repeated before too many years go by.

I like the continuous knee pad. Very clean look.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike

Last time I did everything right down to sewing up my own carpets... Not this time! Seats will be in perforated leather and blackwatch tartan and done by a pro too.

How's your car going? You haven't updated your blog in a while

You put the car together backwards.
The steering wheel is on the wrong side.
You'll have to start all over again ............. LOL.

I'm so pleased with the results of this I'd almost consider doing it a second time!

Nice progress John, its a great motivator having it on its wheels again. It took me about 6 months from wheels on to drivable, you are on the home straight. I took mine for a blast this morning, nice and legal at 100kmph for almost the entire circuit until a people mover crowded my rear bumper and I accidentally shifted into 3rd and red lined it so I could create a safe following distance for him. An early 911 engine at 7100RPM is a beautiful thing.

Hi Guys

Lots of stuff "happening", but very little that's pictorial... I've been spending literally hour upon hour setting panel gaps, fitting the front guards with the correct dum-dum putty, and collecting bits and pieces to finally plumb up the front loop oil cooler that I've been sitting on for 6 years - anyone got a spare thermostat?

I also rigged up a pair of black SC trumpet horns behind the left battery box - never liked the tinny little originals And I've just sandblasted my light clusters for refinishing in white or chrome paint - not sure which will reflect light better (I suspect white).

Things will be slow for a bit more... Off to New Zealand for a ski shortly and some family/kid commitments. Early July will see me launch full bore into the interior trimming, so I'll make sure I document and photograph that process carefully.

John its been a while since Ive lurked on your post. As always I'm amazed at what you can do, well done.

The dash looks good, a bit like mine !

Like the blue, Ill be iterated to see it with all the trim. My red car should be this colour and they're both '69's, I wonder where they were on the line ....

I would be keen to see how you fitted the trumpets behind the battery box. I have the trumpet horns but can not figure a nice/correct bracket to secure them so refitted the pancake versions.
