My 356 restoration project
Hey everyone my name is Mark and this is my first post here. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 1963 356b and have begun restoring it. Car was run in the 90s and early 2000s but wasn't best cared for and was treated like an old bug more than classic.
I have had it about 6 months and after a shakedown and assessment, she ran but was rough, needs brake rebuild, synchro is bad for 1st gear but all in all a solid starter with an interior that is 8.5 out of 10. Goal is to have it be dialed mechanically leave the body as is for now until i take it all apart and blast it in a couple years. I have grown up around Porsches my whole life. My dad is probably the baddest Porsche mechanic around, raised in Germany and been working on Porsches for 43 years. Worked at Kerberg motors, van ness auto mall, Sonnen Porsche then had his own Porsche shop for 10 years and now does restorations at Cars by Dawydiak. SO i have been around Porsches my whole life and have watched my dad the whole time. This isnt my first Porsche rebuild but its the first on im doing "by myself" obviously with help from my Dad. Where I am at now, after dropping some bucks at pelican for some parts to get it up and running and some brake lines, decided to pull the engine and trans. Rons transaxle in the east bay is rebuilding the transaxle and i have the Motor down to the short block. Needs rings and a honing may just buy new pistons and cylinders. Heads are gonna go to a guy named Soren in the bay who my dad has used for years, and all tins are out for powder coating at miller powder-coating in the north bay. I got all new brake lines and cylinders for the brakes and have been polishing and cleaning all the parts that have been caked in oil from the broken ring and leaky push rod tubes. An extra couple bucks could really help get this thing going as I am doing this after having a baby girl 6 months ago and normal life. Either way cant wait to put the engine back together and get it cruising, I love the car but mainly I want my wife to be able to drive it as it was her grandfathers and loves it so much. Thanks for checking it out guys and gals have a great day and good luck to all! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Congrats on your new car.
The 3 best bolt on mods made to our 356 was a tall 4th gear sold by Vic Skirmants. Lowers rpm at least 300 at 75. The next was the Willhoit short shifter and ujoint. And the 123 programable distributor. 1720 pc’s mild cam and Weber’s will bring that engine alive.
